Torringford Street Historic District
The Torringford Street Historic District is a historic district on the east side of the city of Torrington, Connecticut. The district includes properties along Torringford Street ( Route 183), the main thoroughfare of the Torringford section of the city, between United States Route 202 and West Hill Road. The road is one of the oldest in Torrington, and this section is notable for containing a cross-section of well-preserved architecture from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Description and history The land that makes up the city of Torrington was settled in the 1730s and incorporated as a town in 1740. Its bounds were determined by the colonial legislature in 1732, at which time the route of Torringford Street was also laid out. Route 183 is a state highway in northwestern Connecticut, running from Torrington to the Massachusetts state line in Norfolk. Route description Route 183 begins at the junction with Route 4 (New Harwinton Road) in the Litchfield County city of Torrington. A two-lane road through the eastern reaches of Torrington, Route 183 runs north along Torringford Street as a residential road, passing nearby Joe Ruwet Park. The route soon reaches a junction with U.S. Route 202 (US 202; named East Main Street) in the Torringford section of the city. Running northeast past Bishop Donnelly Park, the route passes the nearby middle school and enters a rural section of the town of Torrington. United States Route 202
U.S. Route 202 (US 202) is a spur route of US 2. It follows a northeasterly and southwesterly direction stretching from Delaware to Maine, also traveling through the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The highway has borne the number 202 since at least 1936. Before this, sections of the highway were designated U.S. Route 122, as it intersected US 22 in New Jersey. Its current designation is based on its intersection with I-395 and SR 15 in Maine.
