Tornoceratoidea
Tornoceratoidea, also known as Tornocerataceae, is a superfamily of goniatitid ammonoids included in the suborder Tornoceratina. Tornoceratoidea, or Tornocerataceae, is essentially the Cheilocerataceae of Miller, Furnish, and Schindewolf (1957) in the Treatise Part L, revised to accommodate new taxa and new perspectives on the phylogeny. Taxonomy Tornoceratoid genera are divided among five families, Tornoceratidae, Parodoceratidae, Posttornoceratidae, Pseudoclymediidae, and Kirsoceratidae, some of which have been recently established. Tornoceratidae, essentially the Tornoceratidae of the Treatise, Part L, 1957, included in the Cheilocerataceae is split as a result of new discoveries into three subfamilies, the Tornnoceratinae, Aulatornoceratinae and Falcitornoceratinae, of which the Tornoceratinae is the oldest. Parodoceratidae is one of five families of the Tornoceratoidea superfamily, a member of the Goniatitida order, first proposed by Germaine petter in 1959. Posttornoceratidae
The Posttornoceratidae are Late Devonian goniatites (Ammonoidea) included in the superfamily Tornoceratoidea. The family, Posttornoceratidae, named by Bogoslovsky in 1962, is based on the genus ''Posttornoceras'', named by Wedekind in 1910, originally included in the Tornoceratidae (sensu Miller et al. 1964). The Posttornoceratidae produced subglobular to discoidal shells with small, closed umbilici and lateral lobes in the suture that are produced adventitiously (i.e. haphazardly) from the first lateral saddles. Evolution and taxonomy Derivation The Posttornoceratidae are derived from the Falcitornoceratidae through ''Exotornocers'' (Saunders et al. 2004) Taxonomic divisions Subfamilies The family has been split into two subfamilies each containing two genera. Tornoceratidae
Tornoceratidae is a family of goniatitid ammonoids from the middle and upper Devonian. The family is included in the suborder Tornoceratina and the superfamily Tornoceratoidea. Tornoceratids are subdiscoidal goniatitids with biconvex growth lines and sutures that form 6 to 10 lobes, the ventral one undivided, the lateral ones originating as subdivisions of external and internal lateral saddle. They are derived from the Anarcestida. Taxonomy Tornoceratidae as now understood is essentially the Tornoceratidae of Arthaber (1911) described in the American Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, Part L, revised to include three subfamilies, the Tornoceratinae, Aulatornoceratinae, and Falcitornoceratinae. Tornoceratina
Tornoceratina is one of two suborders included in the Goniatitida, characterized by generally involute, subdiscoidal shells and by sutures in which the ventral ones are undivided. Sutural lobes increase in number during the course of life of the individual, typically developed from the internal and external saddles. Goniatitida Superfamilies
Goniatids, informally goniatites, are ammonoid cephalopods that form the order Goniatitida, derived from the more primitive Agoniatitida during the Middle Devonian some 390 million years ago (around Eifelian stage). Goniatites (goniatitids) survived the Late Devonian extinction to flourish during the Carboniferous and Permian only to become extinct at the end of the Permian some 139 million years later. Morphology All goniatites possessed an external shell, which is divided internally into chambers filled with gas giving it buoyancy during the life of the animal. An open chamber at the front of the shell provided living space for the goniatitid animal, with access to open water through a ventral siphuncle.
