Torma (Skt: Balingta, Tib: Tor-ma, Wylie: gtor ma) are figures made mostly of flour and butter used in tantric rituals or as offerings in Tibetan Buddhism. They may be dyed in different colors, often with white or red for the main body of the torma. They are made in specific shapes based on their purpose, usually conical in form. A very large, central shrine torma may be constructed for festivals, though typically they are small and placed directly on a shrine, on a plate, mounted on leather or held on a special base like a skull. Anna Torma (born 1952) is a Hungarian-Canadian fibre artist. Work Torma specializes in large-scale hand embroideries, and her work draws upon multiple artistic and textile techniques, including appliqué, felting, photo transfer, collage, and quilting. She appropriates visual imagery from multiple sources, including anatomical drawings, folk art, and her children's drawings. She combines traditional methods of the Hungarian textile tradition with the radical reclamation of craft art forms from the avant-garde feminist movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Life and career Torma was born in 1952 in Tarnaörs, Hungary. She learned to embroider from her mother and grandmothers and studied textile art and design at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts (1974-1979). She received a degree in Textile Art and Design from the Hungarian University of Applied Arts, Budapest, Hungary in 1979. She immigrated to Canada in 1988. August Torma
August Torma (born ''August Schmidt''; 19 February 1895 – 12 March 1971) was an Estonian military officer, minister and diplomat. A veteran of the Estonian War of Independence, Torma was awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle, 1st Class, in 1936. Early life August Torma was educated at St. Petersburg University, then attended Vladimir Military Academy. Military career Torma was mobilized into the Russian Imperial Army during World War I and served as an officer. He was seriously injured in Galicia in 1917 and subsequently became a prisoner of war in Austria. He eventually returned to Estonia in 1918 after a prisoner exchange via Denmark. Torma was attached to the British expeditionary force as the Estonian representative during the North Russia Campaign, serving in the area of intelligence. Gábor Torma (born 1 August 1976) is a Hungarian former professional footballer who played as a striker. Career Born in Dunaújváros, Torma started his career at Dunaferr SE, from where he was signed by Cercle Brugge in 1994 to replace Belgian international Josip Weber. He spent three years at the club, and in the 1996–97 season he became the top goalscorer of the team. Due to his exceptional club performance he was called up to the Hungary national team in 1996, where he gained seven caps. After János Csank's resignation in late 1997 he was not called up to the team again. In 1997, he signed for Dutch side Roda JC, and spent the next seven seasons in the Eredivisie, also playing for FC Groningen, ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk. However, he could not any more reach the level of his performances with Brugge, and in 2004 he left the Netherlands for AEL Limassol in Cyprus. Julien Torma
Julien Torma (Cambrai, 6 April 1902 – Tyrol, 17 February 1933) was credited as a French writer, playwright and poet who was part of the Dadaist movement. Torma disappeared in the mountains of the Tyrol at the age of 30. Due to his secretive behaviour and the impossibility of verifying the supposed details of his life (i.e. no living or known family members and every writer he supposedly knew having died long before the publication of his posthumous books - if they are by the author of the early books, no professional career, no fixed address, his body having never been recovered, etc.), it has been suggested by some, including Jean-François Jeandillou, that Torma's existence may be fictitious.Michel Corvin. Július Torma (March 7, 1922, Budapest – October 23, 1991, Prague) was an ethnic Slovakian boxer competing for Czechoslovakia. He won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1948 for Czechoslovakia in the category up to 67 kg. He competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics (1948, 1952 and 1956). Torma defeated Hank Herring of the United States in the 1948 final. Torma also competed as a welterweight in 1952, losing in the quarterfinals; and in 1956, as a Middleweight. Zsófia Torma
Zsófia Torma (26 September 1832 – 14 November 1899) was a Hungarian archaeologist, anthropologist and paleontologist. Life and work Torma was born in Csicsókeresztúr, Beszterce-Naszód County, Austria-Hungary (today Cristeștii Ciceului, Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania). After her parents died, she moved with her sister to Szászváros, now in Romania, where she began to study the snail farms she found in Hunedoara County. She was mostly self-educated. In 1875, she was encouraged by Flóris Rómer, considered by some to be the father of Hungarian archeology, to begin her own excavations of the ancient settlement of Tordos, along the Mureş river. The symbols and scripts on clay objects she found during an excavation in Hunyad County became an archaeological sensation. She also found artifacts of the 6,000- to 7,000-year-old Tordos culture, some of which were covered with Vinca symbols.
