Torfi Jónsson í Klofa
Torfi Jónsson í Klofa (; ), also known as Torfi ríki (; 'Torfi the Powerful/Rich') or Torfi stóri (; 'Torfi the Great'), was an Icelandic sýslumaður and chieftain of the fifteenth century, a significant figure who had tough dealings with Stefán Jónsson, Bishop of Skálholt, and had Lénharð fógeti killed in 1502. Torfi's life is reported in a number of folktales as well as contemporary records, and fact in his life is sometimes hard to distinguish from legend. Life Torfi's parents were Ingibjörg Eiríksdóttir and her husband Jón Ólafsson, a farmer and sýslumaður in Klofi, son of Ólafur Loftsson (d. c. 1458), the son of Loftur ríki Guttormsson. Jón died sometime after 1471 and in 1481 Ingibjörg married Ormur Jónsson í Klofa, a farmer and later sýslumaður of Skarð á Skarðsströnd, who was within four degrees of relation to Ingibjörg and so had to receive papal dispensation to marry her. Sýslumaður
(; plural: ; , , ) is a governmental office or title used in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. The position originated in Norway in the Middle Ages, where it was used as a noble title, and the was granted a fief called a '' sýsla'' (plural: ) in which he was responsible for collecting tolls, taxes and fines, upholding the law and military defences. He was also to hold courts of justice and name men to sit on juries. He sometimes also assigned fiefs to a ''lensmann''. The system was established in the 12th century by Sverre of Norway to help consolidate his power following the Battle of Fimreite. As Norse influence spread, so did the system, reaching into Iceland and the Faroe Islands, as well as Orkney and Shetland. The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the Parliamentary sovereignty, supreme Parliament, national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ('Thing (assembly), thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. Torfajökull
Torfajökull ( Icelandic for "Torfi's glacier"; ) is a rhyolitic stratovolcano, with a large caldera (central volcano) capped by a glacier of the same name and associated with a complex of subglacial volcanoes. Torfajökull last erupted in 1477 and consists of the largest area of silicic extrusive rocks in Iceland. This is now known to be due to a VEI 5 eruption 55,000 years ago. Geography The volcano is located north of Mýrdalsjökull and south of Þórisvatn Lake, Iceland. To its south-west is the volcano and glacier of Tindfjallajökull and almost directly to its west is the volcano of Hekla.
