Torch Lake (Houghton County, Michigan)
Torch Lake is an approximately lake lying mostly within Torch Lake Township with portions within Osceola and Schoolcraft townships in Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The lake is fed by the Traprock River. The village of Lake Linden at the north end of the lake was once the site of the largest copper milling operation in North America. About of copper mill stamp sands were dumped into Torch Lake itself, filling about 20 percent of the lake's volume. The Environmental Protection Agency believes the contaminated sediments to be thick in some areas, and surface sediments contain up to 2,000 parts per million (ppm) of copper. The lake is about east-northeast of Houghton and is approximately long and wide at . The lake has a total surface area of , and a maximum depth of . Lake Linden, Michigan
Lake Linden is a village in Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,007 at the 2010 census. The village is mostly within Schoolcraft Township, though a tiny portion lies in Torch Lake Township. History Lake Linden was named for an early settler. A fire destroyed most of Lake Linden in 188 Lake Linden hosted minor league baseball from 1904 to 1906. The Lake Linden Lakers played as members of the Class C level Northern-Copper Country League and Copper Country Soo League. Lake Linden was the site of a large plant to process the copper ore of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. Calumet and Hecla shut down the operation in 1968. A portion of the village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Lake Linden Historic District in 2009. Torch Lake Township is a civil township of Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population of the township was 1,880. The township was established in 1886 and is one of the largest townships in Houghton County by area. It is surrounded by the Torch Lake, the Portage Lake, and Lake Superior. As well as a large number of unincorporated communities, the township also includes a portion of the Baraga State Forest which lies along the shores of Keweenaw Bay. Schoolcraft Township is a civil township of Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township had a population of 1,839. The township was organized in 1866. Communities *Boot Jack Point was a small mining community. In 1890 it had 173 residents. * Gregoryville, is a town on the east side of the north end of Torch Lake. Gregoryville is named after Joseph Gregoire, who owned a large sawmill and became a successful lumber tycoon. Stamp sand is a coarse sand left over from the processing of ore in a stamp mill. In the United States, the most well-known deposits of stamp sand are in the Copper Country of northern Michigan, where it is black or dark gray, and may contain hazardous concentrations of trace metals. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many metal mines used stamp mills to process ore-bearing rock. The rock was brought to a stamp mill to be crushed. After crushing the material was mechanically separated to extract metals, or chemically treated by acids if the metal could be leached out. The size of the crushed material depended on the nature of the ore found in each mining district.
