The Topkapı Scroll ( tr, Topkapı Parşömeni) is a Timurid dynasty pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapı Palace museum. The scroll is a valuable source of information, consisting of 114 patterns that may have been used both indirectly and directly by architects to create the tiling patterns in many mosques around the world, including the quasicrystal Girih tilings from Darb-e Imam. Physical properties The Topkapı scroll is a wide scroll of in length, which is unrolled side to side. One end of the scroll is fixed to a wooden roller, and the other end is glued to a protective leather piece. A number of parchment pieces featuring various patterns are applied on the scroll. The differences in the border of some drawings indicate that the Topkapı Scroll consists of two different scrolls fixed together. Topkapı, Fatih
Topkapı (meaning "Cannon Gate" in Turkish) is a neighbourhood in Istanbul, Turkey. Topkapı is a part of the district of Fatih. Location Topkapı lies in the west end of Fatih district, under the ancient city walls. It is centred on the Kara Ahmed Pasha Mosque, which stands off Topkapı Caddesi, and is bounded by Vatan Caddesi to the north, and Turgut Ozal Millet Caddesi to the south. Name Topkapı is so named because it was the site at which the Ottoman cannon known as " The Basilic" was deployed during the siege of 1453, against the St Romanus gate in the city walls. The gate was the point at which Sultan Mehmed II entered the city after it fell. The gate was renamed to commemorate this, and the neighbourhood takes its name from there. ''Topkapi'' is a 1964 Technicolor heist film produced by Filmways Pictures and distributed by United Artists. The film was produced and directed by the émigré American film director Jules Dassin. The film is based on Eric Ambler's novel '' The Light of Day'' (1962), adapted as a screenplay by Monja Danischewsky. The film stars Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell, Robert Morley and Akim Tamiroff. The music score was by Manos Hadjidakis, the cinematography by Henri Alekan and the costume design by Theoni V. Aldredge. Nesrin Topkapı (born as Nesrin Gökkaya; 1951) is a Turkish belly dancer. She is known as the first belly dancer to appear on TRT screens. Biography Nesrin Gökkaya born in Akhisar, Manisa Province, learned to dance from her mother Rabia Gökkaya at a young age. She also took ballet lessons. She appeared on the stage as a belly dancer in a casino in Adana when she was six years old. However, due to her childhood, she was forbidden to dance in the casino and the casino was also sealed. Nesrin Gökkaya lost her father when she was 15 years old. She worked in different jobs due to the family's financial difficulties. ''The Light of Day'' is a 1962 novel by Eric Ambler. Plot Arthur Abdel Simpson, the narrator, is an amoral taxi-driver and petty-criminal in Athens, who gets his living mostly by ripping off tourists. One of his targets, a man named Harper, catches him, and blackmails him into driving a car across the border from Greece into Turkey. The Turkish authorities find that the car is loaded with concealed illegal weapons, and Simpson faces the terrifying prospect of a long term in a Turkish prison. Eric Clifford Ambler OBE (28 June 1909 – 22 October 1998) was an English author of thrillers, in particular spy novels, who introduced a new realism to the genre. Also working as a screenwriter, Ambler used the pseudonym Eliot Reed for books cowritten with Charles Rodda. Life Ambler was born in Charlton, South-East London, into a family of entertainers who ran a puppet show, with which he helped in his early years. Both parents also worked as music hall artists. He later studied engineering at the Northampton Polytechnic Institute in Islington (now City, University of London) and served a traineeship with an engineering company.
