Top Springs is a town and locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south of the territory capital of Darwin at the junction of the Buchanan and Buntine highways. Top Springs consists of land around the intersection of the Buchanan and Buntine Highways of an area of about which was surveyed and proclaimed as a town in 1976. The locality's boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. The locality is named after the town with the name being ultimately derived from springs located on the route of the Murranji Track. Development within the town/locality consists of a roadhouse. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Top Springs had a population of 3 people. The Victoria Daly Regional Council is a local government area in the Northern Territory of Australia. The shire covers an area of and had a population of 3,138 in June 2018. History In October 2006 the Northern Territory Government announced the reform of local government areas. The intention of the reform was to improve and expand the delivery of services to towns and communities across the Northern Territory by establishing eleven new shires. Stuart was an electoral divisions of the Northern Territory, electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. Named after Scotland, Scottish explorer John McDouall Stuart, it was initially created in 1947 as one of the five inaugural electoral divisions of the Northern Territory Legislative Council. The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. Buchanan Highway
The Buchanan Highway, Northern Territory, Australia, runs west from Birdum on the Stuart Highway crossing the Buntine Highway at Top Springs and eventually connecting with the Victoria Highway near Timber Creek. it was unsealed for its entire length, at . Buntine Highway
The Buntine Highway is a 581-kilometre highway in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. It runs from the Victoria Highway via Top Springs and Kalkarindji and then to Nicholson, Western Australia. The section from the Victoria Highway to Kalkaringi is a single-lane sealed road with a few dual-lane sections; the remaining section is unsealed. Funding for maintenance is provided by the Northern Territory government. The highway was named in 1996 after Noel Buntine who established a livestock transportation business known as Buntine Roadways in the 1950s in northern Australia. Murranji Track
The Murranji Track or Murranji Stock Route is a stock route in the Northern Territory of Australia and it runs between Newcastle Waters and Top Springs, Northern Territory, Top Springs. The track was primarily operational between 1904 to the late 1960s and it attracted descriptions as the "ghost road of the Drovers" and the "death track". It was used as an entry point to the Barkly Tableland and it is nearby to Wave Hill Station, Wave Hill, Auvergne Station, Auvergne and Victoria River Downs Stations. It is on the lands of the Mudburra and Djingili peoples and their rights to this land has been established by the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act, Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the Native Title Act 1993.
