Tooting Bec Lido
Tooting Bec Lido is an open-air fresh water swimming pool in South London. It is the largest fresh water swimming pool by surface area in the United Kingdom, being 100 yards (91.44 m) long and 33 yards (30.18 m) wide. The Lido is on Tooting Bec Common between Tooting and Streatham. An original condition of construction was that it should be concealed from views across the common by a surrounding earth ramp. This ramp is now largely covered with bird-filled trees, except where it is breached by the new entrance. The alternating bright red, yellow, and green doors of the changing cubicles seen above the turquoise water make the Lido a popular location for advertisement "shoots" and other filming. Tooting is a district in South London, forming part of the London Borough of Wandsworth and partly in the London Borough of Merton. It is located south south-west of Charing Cross. History Tooting has been settled since pre-Saxon times. The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin but the meaning is disputed. It could mean ''the people of Tota'', in which context Tota may have been a local Anglo-Saxon chieftain. Alternatively it could be derived from an old meaning of the verb ''to tout'', to look out. There may have been a watchtower here on the road to London and hence ''the people of the look-out post.'' John Hendry Anderson
John Hendry Anderson (May 1854 – 11 November 1913), was a rector in the Church of England, a schoolmaster, and Mayor of Wandsworth. He was instrumental in creating Tooting Bathing-Lake in London. He was born in Old Machar, a parish and district of Aberdeen, the son of Rev. William Anderson He gained his M.A. from Aberdeen University in 1874, becoming a deacon in the Church of England in 1877 and was ordained priest by the bishop of Norwich in 1878. In the same year he married Alice Hornor, who was born in Norwich. In 1879 he was appointed assistant Master at the Portsmouth Grammar School and curate of All Saints' church, Portsmouth. By 1891 he was Second Master at the Grammar School and curate of St Peter's, Portsea where he lived at 2, Clifton Terrace. In the same year Anderson moved back to Norfolk as Rector of Foulsham. King George's Park is a main park spanning Wandsworth and Southfields, South London. Summary The park was originally called Southfields Park and was laid out in 1922.
