Tooreen Hurling Club
Tooreen Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Tooreen, County Mayo, Ireland. Tooreen is located in the parish of Aghamore approximately four miles (6.4 km) from the town of Ballyhaunis in eastern County Mayo which is the county's hurling stronghold. Players are drawn from the Tooreen area as well as from the Aghamore, Ballyhaunis, Kilkelly and Knock areas. The club is affiliated as an Exclusive Hurling Club to the Mayo County Board. History The club was formed in 1957 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007. The club won its first Mayo Senior Hurling Championship Title in 1966 and is the holder of 30 county senior titles and is the current (2019) champion. In 2017, the club became the first Mayo team, and the first from outside Galway, to win the Connacht Intermediate Hurling final. Ballyhaunis
Ballyhaunis () is a town in County Mayo, Ireland. It is at the crossroads of the N60 and N83 National secondary roads and on the railway line linking Dublin to Westport and Ballina. It is thought that the town grew up around St Mary's Augustinian Friary (popularly referred to as "the Abbey"), which was founded in 1348, according to local tradition. The town and its hinterland contain a number of megalithic monuments. According to the 2016 Census, Ballyhaunis had a population of 2,312. Non-Irish nationals made up 42% of the population, which is much higher than the national average of and is the highest of any town in Ireland. The Mayo County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Maigh Eo) or Mayo GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Mayo and the Mayo county teams. Mayo Senior Hurling Championship
The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested since 1923 by the top Mayo GAA clubs. Tooreen are the current (2022) title holders, defeating Ballyhaunis in the final. Presently the competition has four teams: Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar & Westport. Ballina and Belmullet no longer compete. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the TJ Tyrrell Cup. The winners of the Mayo Senior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. Ballinderreen () is a village located on the N67 route between Kilcolgan and Kinvara in south County Galway, in Ireland. Location and name Ballinderreen village is approximately 22 km south of Galway City and is a part of the townland of Ballinderreen. Ballinderreen is both the name of the Catholic diocesan parish of Galway and the townland where the village is situated. It takes its name from oak trees in the village. Athleague () is a village and a parish in the Diocese of Elphin on the River Suck in the west of Ireland in County Roscommon, near the town of Roscommon. Its church was founded sometime around 500 by Maenucan Atha Liacc ('Maonagán of Athleague'). The name is derived from ''Áth Liag'' ('the ford of the flagstones'), indicating its use as a crossing point between the kingdoms of the Uí Maine and Uí Briúin. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
