Toogood Arm, Newfoundland And Labrador
Too Good Arm is an outport located on New World Island in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It neighbours the communities of Green Cove, Pike's Arm and Cobbs Arm and is a terminus of Route 346. History Sometimes regarded as part of nearby Herring Neck in early records, Too Good Arm was first occupied by European settlers in the early 1800s; by 1840 the Hurley family were noted as living there. The name Too Good Arm first appears in church records in the 1870s. According to the 1921 Census, there were 93 people living in Too Good Arm, a mix of Anglican, Methodist, Salvation Army, and Roman Catholics, with prominent names being Miles, Tuffin, Blake, Bath, Burton, Russell, and Hurley (with all of the Hurley family comprising the Roman Catholic population). Route 346, also known as Toogood Arm, is a highway in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and leads from Route 340 (Road to the Isles) near Newville to Toogood Arm, all on New World Island. The highway runs for and connects the communities of Cobb's Arm, Roger's Cove, Pike's Arm, Green Cove and Toogood Arm to Route 340. Route description Route 346 begins near Newville at an intersection with Route 340 (Road to the Isles) and it heads northeast through wooded and hilly terrain for several kilometres to pass through Cobb's Arm, where it has an intersection with a local road leading to Roger's Cove. The highway now curves to the northwest to meet a local road leading to Pike's Arm and Green Cove before entering Toogood Arm and coming to an end at a Cul-de-sac. Lewisporte, Newfoundland And Labrador
Lewisporte is a town in central Newfoundland, Canada, with a population of 3,288. It is situated in Burnt Bay which opens on to the Bay of Exploits. Lewisporte has a deep water port and related facilities that serve many communities in the region. History Settlers first arrived in Lewisporte, previously named Burnt Bay, and then Marshallville (after the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary William T Marshall who died in 1846), in 1887 and engaged in the prosperous fishing, logging, and ship building industries. Twillingate
Twillingate is a town of 2,121 people located on the Twillingate Islands ("Toulinquet") in Notre Dame Bay, off the north eastern shore of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The town is about north of Lewisporte and Gander. Incorporated on September 30, 1965, the town of Twillingate includes such localities as Back Harbour, Bayview, Durrell, Gillard's Cove, Jenkins Cove, Manuel's Cove, and Wild Cove. Virgin Arm–Carter's Cove is a local service district and designated place on New World Island in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Virgin Arm-Carter's Cove is located approximately 90 km Northwest of Gander in Subdivision H of Division No. 8. History The community of Virgin Arm is located at the head of Friday's Bay, on New World Island. Its name probably originated in the fact that the narrow arm was not settled until the 1870s, although it was used for winter woods work and schooner-building by fishermen from Tizzard's Harbour and Twillingate from the early 19th century. John Hickey (Canadian Politician)
John Hickey (c. 1955 – December 14, 2017) was a politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He represented the district of Lake Melville in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 2003 to 2011. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and served in the Cabinets of Danny Williams and Kathy Dunderdale. On July 5, 2006, Hickey was appointed to the Executive Council of Newfoundland and Labrador as Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister of Labrador Affairs. Following the 2007 election, Hickey remained in cabinet as Minister of Labrador Affairs, but lost the transportation portfolio. On June 22, 2011, Hickey confirmed that he would not seek re-election in the October 2011 provincial election.
