Tony The Landshark
Tony the Landshark is the mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels, the collegiate athletic teams of the University of Mississippi. The anthropomorphic shark replaced Rebel Black Bear as the official mascot in 2018. On October 6, 2017, former Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter announced that the new university mascot would be the Landshark, beginning with the 2018–19 season. History of the landshark at Ole Miss The landshark symbol first made an appearance during the 2008 football season. The hand sign was created by Tony Fein. Fein, a native of Port Orchard, Washington, was an Army veteran who served a one-year tour in the Iraq War before arriving in Oxford. In 2009, Fein died from a drug overdose. The landshark symbol became less prominent as Fein departed from the football field, however it reemerged during the 2014 football season, when the Rebels possessed the best defense in the nation. University Of Mississippi
The University of Mississippi (byname Ole Miss) is a public research university that is located adjacent to Oxford, Mississippi, and has a medical center in Jackson. It is Mississippi's oldest public university and its largest by enrollment. The Mississippi Legislature chartered the university on February 24, 1844, and four years later it admitted its first 80 students. During the Civil War, the university operated as a Confederate hospital and narrowly avoided destruction by Ulysses S. Grant's forces. In 1962, during the civil rights movement, a race riot occurred on campus when segregationists tried to prevent the enrollment of African American student James Meredith. The 2013 Southeastern Conference men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Southeastern Conference held from March 13–17, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee at Bridgestone Arena. Southeastern Conference Mascots
The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. A compass rose is primarily composed of four cardinal directions—north, east, south, and west—each separated by 90 degrees, and secondarily divided by four ordinal (intercardinal) directions—northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest—each located halfway between two cardinal directions. 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament
The 2017 NCAA Division I softball tournament was held from May 18 through June 7, 2017, as the final part of the 2017 NCAA Division I softball season. The 64 participating NCAA Division I college softball teams were selected out of an eligible 293 teams on May 14, 2017. Thirty-two teams were awarded automatic bids as champions of their conferences, and the remaining 32 were selected at-large by the NCAA Division I softball selection committee. The tournament culminated with eight teams playing in the 2017 Women's College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma would repeat as National Champions, defeating Florida in 2 games and 17 innings in the first game. Oklahoma became the lowest seeded team to ever win the National Championship, winning as the 10 seed. 2017 Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament
The 2017 SEC softball tournament was held at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on the campus of University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, from May 10 through May 13, 2017. The tournament will earn the Southeastern Conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I softball tournament. The Championship game was broadcast on ESPN and the semifinals were broadcast on ESPNU, while all other SEC tournament games will be live on the SEC Network. Marshall Henderson
Marshall James Henderson (born September 19, 1990) is a former professional American basketball player. He last played for Pavia Basket in the Italian Serie C-Gold league. He played college basketball for the Ole Miss Rebels and was a former graduate manager for the team. Henderson is now an Assistant Coach at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. High school career Henderson was a standout basketball player for L. D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas. He played for his father, Willie Henderson, and scored 2,289 points in his career. As a senior, Henderson was All-County and District MVP as he averaged 25.8 points, 5.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.8 steals. The 2002 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 65 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 12, 2002, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. A total of 64 games were played. The 2012–13 Ole Miss Rebels men's basketball team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2012–13 college basketball season. The team's head coach was Andy Kennedy, in his seventh season at Ole Miss. The team played their home games at the Tad Smith Coliseum in Oxford, Mississippi as a member of the Southeastern Conference. Rebel, The Black Bear was the mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels, the collegiate athletic teams of the University of Mississippi. The anthropomorphic black bear replaced Colonel Reb as the official mascot in 2010. On October 6, 2017, Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter announced that the new university mascot would be the Landshark, beginning with the 2018–19 season. Mascot search In 2003, Colonel Reb was removed from the sidelines at Ole Miss athletic events as the on-the-field mascot after facing criticism that the character was offensive and racially insensitive. A contest was held in which fans were invited to design a replacement. The athletic department chose two finalists, Rebel Bruiser and Rowdy Rebel, and invited fans to vote on their favorite. 2014 Ole Miss Rebels Football Team
The 2014 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi in the 2014 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was coached by Hugh Freeze, in his third season with Ole Miss. The Rebels played their home games at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, and competed in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Rebels won the first seven games of the season, their best start since the Johnny Vaught era. By October, they had risen as high as third in the nation, the highest they had been ranked at that late date in over half a century.
