Tony Liddle
Anthony "Tony" Liddle (born 1940) is a truck driver and tour guide who has made a significant contribution to the development of Central Australia. Early life Liddle was born at Hatches Creek, his mother's country, in the Davenport Ranges of Central Australia to Milton and Polly (Ngwarie) Liddle in 1940. In 1942, when he was a toddler, the family moved to Alice Springs, although they did regularly visit his family's cattle station Angas Downs Station (now Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area). As an Aboriginal family, they were subject to regular inspection and, at risk of the children being taken farther away, they were forced to make the decision to have the children live away: the government considered Liddle and his siblings "5\8 caste". Because of this, Tony and his siblings boarded at the convent and, from 1951 - 1956, St. Mary's Hostel, an institution for half-caste children, and they attended Hartley Street School during the day. Central Australia
Central Australia, also sometimes referred to as the Red Centre, is an inexactly defined region associated with the geographic centre of Australia. In its narrowest sense it describes a region that is limited to the town of Alice Springs and its immediate surrounds including the MacDonnell Ranges. In its broadest use it can include almost any region in inland Australia that has remained relatively undeveloped, and in this sense is synonymous with the term Outback. Centralia is another term associated with the area, most commonly used by locals. As described by Charles Sturt in one of the earlier uses of the term "A veil hung over Central Australia that could neither be pierced or raised. Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area
Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) is an Aboriginal Australian-owned pastoral lease, within the MacDonnell Shire area, south-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, east from Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayers Rock), south-east of Kings Canyon/Watarrka National Park and from Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse on the Lasseter Highway. The property is a pastoral lease held by the Imanpa Development Association. It was declared and formally recognised as an Indigenous Protected Area as part of the Australian Government's Caring for Country scheme on 10 June 2009. The property forms part of Australia's National Reserve System. Previous land management practices and other anthropogenic pressures had damaged Angas Downs, and many native species have disappeared. Hartley Street School
Hartley Street School in Alice Springs (formerly Stuart), Northern Territory, Australia, was the first purpose-built school in the town. Its oldest buildings were constructed in 1929, and it opened in 1930 to cater for the growing population in the town following the completion of the railway line from Adelaide to Alice Springs. Albert Namatjira
Albert Namatjira (born Elea Namatjira; 28 July 1902 – 8 August 1959) was an Arrernte painter from the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia, widely considered one of the greatest and most influential Australian artists. As a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art, he was arguably one of the most famous Indigenous Australians of his generation. He was the first Aboriginal artist to receive popularity from a wide Australian audience. A member of the Western Arrernte people, Namatjira was born and raised at the remote Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission, 126 km west-southwest from Alice Springs. Len Tuit
Leonard Roy Tuit or Len Tuit (1911–1976) was a pioneer in Central Australian road transport and tourism and is credited as being the first person to recognised the tourism potential of Uluru. Early life Tuit was born at Prospect, South Australia, Prospect in South Australia in 1911 and is the son of Clarence and Olive Tuit. Life in the Northern Territory Tuit arrived in Alice Springs in 1932 after an eleven-day journey in a Diamond T 4-ton 6x6 truck, Diamond T truck and started doing contract driver work for David Baldock, primarily driving between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, which he did for the next three years. Palm Valley (Northern Territory)
Palm Valley, within the Finke Gorge National Park, is an east-west running valley in the Krichauff Range 123 km (138 km by road) southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia. Palm Valley and the surrounding area is the only place in Central Australia where Red Cabbage Palms ('' Livistona mariae'') survive. The nearest specimens are 850 kilometres away in Queensland. The surrounding region is largely dry Central Ranges xeric scrub. The average rainfall for Palm Valley is only 200 mm per year. Although the gorge usually appears dry, there are some small pockets of semi-permanent spring-fed pools that allow the unique flora in this region to survive.
