Tony Hughes (actor)
Tony Hughes is an American actor and singer. As an actor, he starred in ''The Lost Islands'' (1976), ''Chopper Squad'' (1977–1979) and the film adaptation of ''Puberty Blues'' (1981). As a singer he has fronted Bellydance and King Tide. Hughes was born in England and moved to Australia at age 12. He moved into acting in the 1970s, first appearing in an episode of ''The Rovers''. He then appeared in the entire ''The Lost Islands'' and ''Chopper Squad'' series. He made his first feature film appearance in a small part in ''My Brilliant Career''. He was then a major cast member of ''Puberty Blues''. After a few more small parts he moved into music, playing with Bellydance until they disbanded and then forming King Tide. The Lost Islands
''The Lost Islands'' is an Australian television series which first aired in Australia on Network Ten. It later screened around the world, including the United Kingdom, France, West Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Greece (and various other parts of Europe), as well as Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Canada and the United States. Plot A hurricane nearly sinks the ''United World'', a sailing ship holding 40 teenagers from all around the world. Most of them flee the ship in lifeboats, but the evacuating children are not counted, and five are left behind. The storm blows the battered ship across a reef into the lagoon of an uncharted island. The island, Tambu, is ruled by a supposedly 200-year-old immortal tyrant called "Q", who came to the island on one of several ships originally bound for New Holland. Chopper Squad
''Chopper Squad'' is an Australian television series produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation for the 0-10 Network (as it was then known).Albert Moran, ''Moran's Guide to Australian TV Series'', AFTRS 1993 p 115 The series recounted the work of a helicopter rescue team operating on Dee Why beach in Sydney. Production Pilot The original pilot was made in 1976, airing in Melbourne in November 1976 and Newcastle (NSW) in August 1977. There was quite a time lag between the pilot and the series going to air in May 1978. As with many series there were changes between the initial pilot and the series. Three actors from the pilot did not continue into the series - Rebecca Gilling, Max Osbiston and Tony Bonner. Additionally, the surnames of characters Phil and Tim were changed. ''Puberty Blues'' is a 1981 Australian coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Bruce Beresford, based on the 1979 novel of the same name (essentially a protofeminist teen novel) by Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey. Bellydance (band)
Bellydance were an Australian 9 piece dance, funk band originally known as Bellydance Disco, which formed in Sydney 1987. Mainstays were Tony Hughes on vocals, Frank Ward on bass, Ted Cavanagh on guitar and Scott Saunders (also in Directions in Groove) on keyboards. Featured a range of musicians/vocalists and brass. Their debut album, ''One Blood'' (1993), was nominated at the ARIA Music Awards of 1994 for Best Pop Release. History Bellydance were formed as a dance, funk band, Bellydance Disco, in Sydney in 1987 by mainstays Ted Cavanagh on guitar, the actor, Tony Hughes on vocals, and Scott Saunders (ex-Deckchairs Overboard, Beatfish) on keyboards. ''My Brilliant Career'' is a 1979 Australian period drama film directed by Gillian Armstrong, and starring Judy Davis, Sam Neill, and Wendy Hughes. Based on the 1901 novel of the same name by Miles Franklin, it follows a young woman in rural, late-19th-century Australia whose aspirations to become a writer are impeded first by her social circumstance, and later by a budding romance.
