Tony Egginton
Tony Egginton (born 1951) was the first directly elected Mayor of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, England. He was elected to the position on 17 October 2002, beating Labour Party (UK), Labour's Lorna Carter by 588 votes, ending 30 years of Labour control. Egginton was re-elected in 2007 and again 2011 Mansfield mayoral election, 2011, holding the position until his retirement at the end of his third-term of office in May, 2015. He had previously been a newsagent. Egginton is a village and civil parish in the local government district of South Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 574. Location The village is located just off Ryknild Street, otherwise known as the A38, between Derby and Stretton, Burton upon Trent. It is historically a farming community. Due to a historical legal situation, no alcohol is allowed to be sold in the village and hence there is no village pub. In Fishpond Lane there is a row of tenants' cottages, some of which have their windows bricked up, dating back to the days of window-tax. The village does not have a war memorial in the normal sense but it has a memorial hall which doubles as the village school and as a community hall. Airfield After the closure of the former Burnaston Airport nearby, Derby Airfield was established at Egginton. Jacksons Stores Ltd, named after the founder William Jackson, was a British chain of 114 convenience shops in Yorkshire and the North Midlands that was founded in 1891 by the Hull-based William Jackson & Sons Ltd and sold to Sainsbury's in 2004, an acquisition which doubled that company's share of the convenience shop market. Kate Allsop
Kate Allsop is a British local politician who was the directly elected mayoress of Mansfield from 2015 until the 2019 election when she was beaten by Labour candidate Andy Abrahams by two votes. She first stood for the post in 2002 as a member of the Conservative Party. Allsop left the Conservative party in 2003 to become an "Independent Conservative", describing herself in the local newspaper as "true blue", remaining as president of Mansfield's Conservative Association. She later joined the Mansfield Independent Forum and was elected as a councillor in 2011. She succeeded Tony Egginton as mayor after beating the Labour party candidate in the 2015 Mayoral election.
