Tony Oladipo Allen (20 July 1940 – 30 April 2020) was a Nigerian drummer, composer, and songwriter who lived and worked in Paris, France. Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979, and was one of the founders of the Afrobeat genre. Fela once stated that "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat". He was described by Brian Eno as "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived". Later in life, Allen collaborated with Damon Albarn on several projects, including Gorillaz, the Good, the Bad & the Queen and Rocket Juice & the Moon. Allen's career and life were documented in his 2013 autobiography ''Tony Allen: Master Drummer of Afrobeat'', co-written with Michael E. Veal, who previously wrote a comprehensive biography of Fela Kuti. Foster and Allen are a musical duo from Ireland consisting of Mick Foster and Tony Allen. In their 47-year career, they have released over 52 albums, many of which entered the UK Albums Chart. Along with "A Bunch of Thyme" (entering the Irish chart in 1979 and becoming their first No. 1 single), "Maggie" became a No. 1 in New Zealand for four weeks, making the two songs their signature tunes. They started in the 1970s as a duo, but in 1982 they added a band to their show. They have achieved album and video sales in excess of 25 million worldwide. Anthony Allen (27 November 1939 – 2 December 2022) was an English footballer who played most of his club career as a left-back for Stoke City between 1957 and 1970. He also made three appearances for England in 1959, before his twentieth birthday. Career Allen was born in Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, and after playing football for his schools and the Boys' Brigade, he was signed by Stoke City as an amateur, before turning professional on his seventeenth birthday in November 1956. He instantly became a regular under Frank Taylor establishing himself at left-back with ease. Although playing outside the top division, his talents were soon spotted by the England selectors. Anthony Allen (born January 11, 1982), nicknamed "The Grindfather," is an American former professional basketball player who played for 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), primarily for the Memphis Grizzlies. He is a six-time member on the NBA All-Defensive Team, including three times on the All-Defensive First Team. Allen won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008. Tony Allen (born 4 March 1945) is an English comedian and writer. Best known as one of the original " alternative comedians", Tony Allen's artistic career had taken many radical turns before he temporarily abandoned his Speakers' Corner "Full-Frontal Anarchy Platform" in May 1979 for the stage of London's Comedy Store. Two months later he founded Alternative Cabaret with Alexei Sayle and ran a regular "Alt Cab" Club night in the back bar of the Elgin pub on Ladbroke Grove. Plays In 1973, Allen was co-founder with John Miles of Rough Theatre and co-wrote and performed in all five of its productions. Tony Allen is an American academic administrator working as the president of the Delaware State University since 2020. Early life and education Allen was born to R. Leatha Allen. He moved to Delaware at the age of 3. Allen completed an undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Delaware. In March 1991, he was one of 200 black student activists who participated in a sit-in at Smith Hall.
