Tongxiao Shrine
The Tongxiao Shrine () is a shrine in Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. History The shrine was built in 1937 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China, the main hall of the shrine was renovated by Tongxiao Mayor into the Tongxiao Zhonglie Shrine in 1947 for people to honor the fallen Republic of China Armed Forces in World War II. The shrine was damaged by the Jiji earthquake in 1999. In 2002, the government designated the shrine as historical monument and restored it. The main shrine has eventually turned into Martyr's Shrine and honour Koxinga. Transportation The shrine is accessible within walking distance north east of Tongxiao Station of Taiwan Railways. Miaoli County
Miaoli County (Mandarin Pinyin: ''miáo lì xiàn''; Hakka PFS: ''Mèu-li̍t-yen''; Hokkien POJ: ''Biâu-le̍k-koān'' or ''Miâu-le̍k-koān'') is a county in western Taiwan. Miaoli is adjacent with Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City to the north, Taichung to the south, and borders the Taiwan Strait to the west. Miaoli is classified as a county in central Taiwan by the National Development Council, while the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau classifies Miaoli as a county in northern Taiwan. Miaoli City is the capital of the county, and is also known as "Mountain Town", owing to the number of mountains nearby, making it a destination for hiking. Flying Cow Ranch
The Flying Cow Ranch () is a tourist attraction ranch in Nanhe Village, Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. History The ranch was originally established as Central Youth Dairy Farm in 1975. In 1995, it was renamed to Flying Cow Ranch. Architecture The ranch spans over an area of 50 hectares and the pasture and cow raising area of 120 hectares. It is located at an altitude of 180-270 meters. The ranch features accommodation services, food and beverages services, dairy products sales and barbecue and camping sites. Transportation The ranch is accessible South East from Tongxiao Station of the Taiwan Railways. Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage
The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage () is usually held annually between lunar January and April in the western plains of Taiwan, a major Taoist religious event since 1863. After every lunar new year, the Mazu statue of Gongtian Temple () at Baishatun, Tongxiao of Miaoli County, is placed in a palanquin and carried in procession to visit another Mazu Temple- Chaotian Temple (), located in the area of Beigang of Yunlin County, then returns to Gongtian Temple to end this pilgrimage. The distance covered is approximately 400 km total. There is another Mazu statue, called "Mazu of the Mountain Side ()", from Houlong Township () of Miaoli county, that would accompany Baishatun Mazu during the pilgrimage as well. Gongtian Temple
Baishatun Gongtian Temple () is a temple located in Baishatun, Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. The temple is dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, who is the deified form of Lin Moniang. Gongtian Temple is noted for its annual Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage, where worshippers travel to Chaotian Temple in Beigang, Yunlin on foot. History The coastal village of Baishatun was first inhabited during the reign of Qianlong Emperor, where a rudimentary temple was built here to pray for the safety of fishermen. Towards the end of Xianfeng Emperor's reign, local residents donated money to build a larger temple made of brick, which was completed in 1863 ( Tongzhi 2); this temple was named Gongtian Temple.
