Ton Strien
A.G.J. (Ton) Strien (born 23 March 1958 in Lopik) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). Since 1 September 2007 he has been burgemeester, Mayor of Olst-Wijhe, succeeding Bert Hinnen. He has also been vice president and treasurer of the National Association CDA. Previously he was a member of the Provinciale Staten, provincial parliament of Utrecht (province), Utrecht, an wethouder, alderman of Houten and also a member of the municipal council (Netherlands), municipal council of this municipality. Strien started his career as a civil servant. In the Netherlands, the municipal council (Dutch: ''gemeenteraad'') is the elected assembly of the municipality. Its main role is laying down the guidelines for the policy of the municipal executive and exercising control over its execution by the mayor and aldermen. The municipal councils range in size from nine to 45 seats, depending on the municipality's population, and are elected by the population every four years. In many municipalities all major political parties contest in the election in addition to local parties. Houten () is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. Lopik
Lopik () is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht, close to the Lek river. History Lopik lies within the Lopikerwaard region, which used to be occupied by swamps and forests until the area was cultivated in the eleventh century. Lopik was first mentioned as "Lobeke" in 1155 CE. Most of the population settled along the canals that were used for transport and drainage (and which are still used for the latter purpose). It was not until after World War II that villages in the area were expanded beyond the original ribbons of buildings, and Lopik remains a well-known example of a linear settlement within the Netherlands.
