Tompkins is a town in Delaware County, New York, United States. The population was 1,247 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Daniel D. Tompkins, the fourth governor of New York and sixth vice president of the United States. The town is in the western part of the county. History The town was formed in 1806 from part of the town of Franklin. The western part of the town was lost to form the town of Deposit in 1880. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, Tompkins has a total area of , of which is land and , or 6.05%, is water. The Cannonsville Reservoir on the West Branch Delaware River crosses the center of the town. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,105 people, 445 households, and 315 families residing in the town. The population density was 11.2 people per square mile (4.3/km2). Tompkins Township is in northwestern Jackson County and is bordered to the north by Ingham County. The Tompkins Table is an annual ranking that lists the Colleges of the University of Cambridge in order of their undergraduate students' performances in that year's examinations. Two colleges— Darwin and Clare Hall—do not have undergraduate students and do not feature in the list. It was created in 1981 by Peter Tompkins, then a third-year undergraduate mathematics student at Trinity College, who compiled it for many years. It was formerly published by ''The Independent''. Since 2016, it has been published by '' Varsity'', a student newspaper of the University of Cambridge. It is not an official University of Cambridge table. It does not take account of students who are not candidates for Honours degrees, or those who have failed to gain a degree. It was not published in 2020 or 2021 as a result of the restrictions to the examination process brought about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
