Tomoyuki Arakawa
Tomoyuki Arakawa (Japanese: ; born 22 May 1968) is a Japanese mathematician, mathematical physicist, and a professor at the RIMS of the Kyoto University. His research interests are representation theory and vertex algebras and he is known especially for the work in W-algebras. He obtained his PhD from the University of Nagoya in 1999. In mathematics, a vertex operator algebra (VOA) is an algebraic structure that plays an important role in two-dimensional conformal field theory and string theory. In addition to physical applications, vertex operator algebras have proven useful in purely mathematical contexts such as monstrous moonshine and the geometric Langlands correspondence. The related notion of vertex algebra was introduced by Richard Borcherds in 1986, motivated by a construction of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra due to Igor Frenkel. MSJ Autumn Prize
The Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ, ja, 日本数学会) is a learned society for mathematics in Japan. In 1877, the organization was established as the ''Tokyo Sugaku Kaisha'' and was the first academic society in Japan. It was re-organized and re-established in its present form in 1946.
