Tommy Scourfield
Thomas Scourfield (26 February 1909 – 14 February 1976) was a Welsh dual code rugby international full back who played club rugby for Ynysybwl and Torquay as an amateur rugby union player and played professional rugby league with Huddersfield. He won a single international cap with both the league and union Wales teams. Rugby union career Scourfield was born in Pontypridd in 1909 before moving to Ynysybwl. In 1930 Scourfield was selected for his one and only appearance for Wales in a game against France as part of the 1930 Five Nations Championship. Under the captaincy of Guy Morgan, Scourfield made the trip to Paris to play the French at Stade Colombes. The game was an extremely bad-tempered affair from a French team well known throughout the 1930s for their rough play. The game took a turn for the worse when Scourfield collected a loose ball from the back and kicked it into touch. 1934–35 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1934–35 Rugby Football League season was the 40th season of rugby league football. A single league Championship was contested by twenty eight teams. The Challenge Cup was contested for the 35th time and the first European Championship took place between England, France and Wales. Season summary Swinton won their third Championship beating Warrington 14–3 in the play-off final after ending the regular season as the league leaders. The Challenge Cup winners were Castleford who defeated Huddersfield 11–8 in the final. London Highfield returned north and changed their name to Liverpool Stanley. Bradford Northern move into their new Odsal Stadium. The first match there on 1 September 1934 ended in a loss to Huddersfield. Salford won the Lancashire League, and Leeds won the Yorkshire League. A dual-code rugby international is a rugby footballer who has played at the senior international level in both codes of rugby, 13-a-side rugby league and 15-a-side rugby union. Rugby league started as a breakaway version of rugby in Northern England in 1895 and in New Zealand and Australia in 1908, and consequently a number of early top-class rugby league players had been star players in the rugby union code. Accordingly, a high proportion of Australia and New Zealand's dual-code rugby internationals played in rugby league's formative years in those countries. From 1910 to 1995, dual-code internationals were infrequent and with the single exception of Karl Ifwersen, the player had always first appeared as a union international before shifting to league, due to strict bans applied by administrators in rugby union, which remained amateur, to those players who crossed to the professional code.
