Tommy Downs
Tommy Downs (22 May 1901 – 11 August 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Downs was a Woodham Cup winner at Northcote in 1925, having previously played with Preston. One of shortest ever footballers at Carlton, Downs had a poor record at the VFL tribunal. He was suspended for 12 games in 1928 and 19 games the following season, both for striking. The former came in a Semi Final loss to Richmond when he kicked a career best four goals and the latter was in a Preliminary Final. Northcote Football Club
Northcote Football Club (/ˈnoːθ.kət/), nicknamed The Dragons, was an Australian rules football club which played in the VFA from 1908 until 1987. The club's colours for most of its time in the VFA were green and yellow and it was based in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. The J. J. Liston Trophy is awarded annually to the best and fairest senior player in the Victorian Football League (formerly the Victorian Football Association). It is named after J.J. Liston, a businessman, civic leader and sports administrator who was fundamental in advancing sport in Australia, particularly Australian Rules Football and Soccer. Maurie Hunter
Maurice Harold Hunter (5 March 1904 – 31 October 1987) was an Australian rules football player who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1929 and 1933 for the Richmond Football Club. Football Prior to joining Richmond he played in four premiership teams with St Patrick's of Albury (NSW) between 1923 and 1928. In 1928 he kicked 19 goals in a semi-final against Wangaratta in the Ovens & Murray Football League. He left St Patricks in 1929 for , two years later they made him captain. He was a premiership player in 1932 and the clubs best and fairest in 1933. In 1934 he was captain / coach of Camberwell in the VFA for the first part of the season, until Horrie Mason took over from Hunter after seven games. Hunter then left Camberwell in July, 1934 to play with Richmond Districts FC in the Melbourne Sub Districts Football Association.
