Tommy Calandro
Tommy Calandro (born 1968) is a former Olympic weightlifter who represented the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics. He placed 19th in the men's middle-heavyweight event. Coached by Gayle Hatch, he was the first Olympic weightlifter from Baton Rouge. Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting (officially named Weightlifting), is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The ''snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. 1984 Summer Olympics
The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. Gayle Hatch
Gayle Hatch (born May 7, 1939) is an American athlete and coach who was the USA Weightlifting Senior U.S. International Coach. Hatch served as Head Coach of the men’s USA Olympic Weightlifting Team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Hatch is a member of the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame, the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame and the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame. The Gayle Hatch Weightlifting Team has won 49 USA Weightlifting National Championships. Gayle Hatch athletes have competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics, the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1992 Summer Olympics in weightlifting events. His athletes have participated on 12 USA World Teams. The 1987 Pan American Games, officially known as the X Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event held in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, on August 7–23, 1987. Over 4,300 athletes from 38 countries in the Americas competed in 30 sports, earning 1,015 medals. Events were held at 23 venues in and around Indianapolis.
