Tomhannock Reservoir
The water source for the city of Troy, New York is the Tomhannock Reservoir, a man-made reservoir northeast of Troy in the town of Pittstown. The reservoir is long, and holds when full. Water quality is good to excellent. Licensed fishing (both warm-weather and ice fishing) is a popular recreational activity. The reservoir supplies water to about 50,000 residents in Troy, as well as to about 85,000 residents in the nearby municipalities of Brunswick, East Greenbush, Halfmoon, Menands, North Greenbush, Poestenkill, Rensselaer, Schaghticoke and Waterford. North Greenbush is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. North Greenbush is located in the western part of the county. The population was 13,292 at the 2020 census. Rensselaer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 161,130. Its county seat is Troy. The county is named in honor of the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original Dutch owner of the land in the area. Schaghticoke, New York
Schaghticoke is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 7,679 at the 2010 census. It was named for the Schaghticoke, a Native American tribe formed in the seventeenth century from an amalgamation of remnant peoples of eastern New York and New England. The tribe has one of the oldest reservations in the United States, located in what is now Litchfield County, Connecticut. Rensselaer is a city in Rensselaer County, New York, United States, and is located on the east side of the Hudson River, directly opposite of Albany. Poestenkill, New York
Poestenkill is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 4,530 at the 2010 census. The town is southeast of Troy and is centrally located in the county. The town is named after the Poesten Kill, an important stream in the area. The phrase ''poesten kil'' (with only one ''l'') is traditionally said to be Dutch for "foaming water" or "foaming creek". While '' kil'' is, indeed, Dutch for "water" or "creek", Dutch dictionaries do not support the claim of ''poest'' meaning "foam". Menands, New York
Menands is a village in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 3,990 at the 2010 census. The village is named after Louis Menand. The village lies inside the town of Colonie and borders the northern city line of Albany. History Menands would have been first spotted by Europeans ''circa'' 1609, when Henry Hudson dropped anchor somewhere near Cuyler or Pleasure Island during his voyage on the river later to be named after him. This would be the furthest north on the river that Hudson would go in the Half Moon. Halfmoon is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 25,662 at the 2020 census. The town is apparently named for the shape of the lower elevation land north of the junction of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. It is also said to be named for Henry Hudson's ship, the Halve Maen.
