Tom Trewin
Thomas Campion Trewin (9 October 1914 – 14 July 1992) was an Australian politician. He was born in Benalla to farmer Percy Charles Trewin and schoolteacher Ellen Alice Bradbury. Educated at Goorambat and Benalla, he became a farmer at Devenish. On 23 March 1940 he married Eliza May Martin; they had four children. Benalla, Victoria
Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first sighted by Europeans during an expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and was noted as an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". Goorambat is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Goorambat and the surrounding area had a population of 297. History The Post Office opened on 17 March 1879 and the office named Goorambat Railway Station opened in 1883. Goorambat was later renamed Goorambat East and around 1909 Goorambat Railway Station was renamed to Goorambat. Queen Elizabeth II visited Goorambat in 1954 as part of her Victorian Tour and she stayed over in her royal carriage for one night. The Mechanics Institute hall, commonly known as the Goorambat Hall, opened on 18 September 1888 and is still in use currently. Devenish is a town in northern Victoria, Australia within the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Devenish and the surrounding area had a population of 360, declining to 197 by 2016. History The Post Office opened on 9 June 1877 as Broken Creek and was renamed Devenish in 1878. In 1883 on the arrival of the railway, the office was moved and named Devenish Railway Station, reverting to Devenish in about 1889 as the township developed. An earlier office dating from 1870, Major Plains, was known as Devenish from 1874 until 1878. The Devenish concrete grain silos were built between the railway line and the main street and opened to receive wheat in December 1943. Later the Bulk Oat storage building was built in 1965. Benalla was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. The electorate covered a rural area of 17,120 km², and included the towns of Benalla, Bright, Eildon, Euroa, Mansfield, Mount Beauty, Murchison, Myrtleford, Nagambie and Violet Town. The electorate had a population of 47,675 as of the 2006 census, with 36,987 enrolled electors in the 2010 state election. The seat was created in 1904. Frederick Cook (Australian Politician)
Frederick Albert Cook, known by his second name Albert, (22 March 1883 – 23 December 1971) was an Australian politician. He was born at Baddaginnie to storekeeper Frederick John Cook and Maria Dosser. After a state education he carried on his father's stores in Baddaginnie and Benalla. On 26 December 1915 he married Neva Garland Mowatt, with whom he had five children; a second marriage on 20 April 1943 to Kathleen Flora Curry produced two further children. He served on Benalla Shire Council from 1924 to 1964 and was twice president (1931–32, 1953–54). Patrick John McNamara (born Melbourne, 11 August 1949) is a former Australian politician who was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, representing Benalla for the National Party from 1982 to 2000. From 1988 to 1999, he was leader of the National Party in Victoria and was Deputy Premier of Victoria under Jeff Kennett from 1992 to 1999. He held several ministerial positions in the Kennett government, including Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Minister for Tourism, Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrections. During his tenure as Deputy Premier, Kennett's Liberals actually held a majority in their own right. Although Kennett did not need the support of McNamara's Nationals, the coalition was retained.
