Tom Stannage
Charles Thomas Stannage, AM (14 March 19444 October 2012) was a prominent Western Australian historian, academic, and Australian rules football player. He edited the major work ''A New History of Western Australia'', which was published in 1981. Stannage held a professorship in history at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and was executive dean of humanities at Curtin University. Biography Early life Tom Stannage was born in Subiaco, Western Australia, on 14 March 1944. His mother, Helen Eakins-Stannage (née Helen Russel Masters) was originally from Northam and his father, the Rev. James Eakins-Stannage was an Anglican cleric born in the United Kingdom. Tom Stanage
Thomas Shaun Stanage (1932 – 18 March 2020) was bishop of Bloemfontein in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa from 1982 to 1997. Biography Stanage was born in Ireland in 1932 and was educated at Pembroke College, Oxford ( BA 1956, MA 1960) and Cuddesdon College (1956–58). He was ordained deacon in 1958, priest in 1959 and bishop in 1978 and went on to serve as an assistant curate of Great Crosby St Faith 1958–61, Minister of Orford St Andrew Conventional District (1961–63) and vicar of St Andrew's Church, Orford (1963–70). He has lived and worked in South Africa since 1970. In 1975 he was appointed Dean of Kimberley, remaining in office until 1978 when he was elected suffragan bishop of Johannesburg. Bassendean, Western Australia
__NOTOC__ Bassendean (once referred to as West Guildford) is a north-eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the Town of Bassendean. It is also the name of the sand dune system on the Swan Coastal Plain known as the ''Bassendean Dune System''. History In 1829, the land along the Swan River was allotted to British settlers as they arrived in the newly created Swan River Colony. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. West Coast Eagles
The West Coast Eagles are a professional Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club was founded in 1986 as one of two expansion teams in the Australian Football League (AFL), then known as the Victorian Football League. The club plays its home games at Perth Stadium and has its headquarters at Lathlain Park. The West Australian Football Commission wholly owns the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Football Club, the AFL's other Western Australian team. Swan Districts Football Club
The Swan Districts Football Club, nicknamed the Swans, is an Australian rules football club playing in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and WAFL Women's (WAFLW). The club is based at Bassendean Oval, in Bassendean, an eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The club was formed in 1932, and joined the then-Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) in 1934, acting as a successor to the Midland Junction Football Club, which had disbanded during World War I, in the Perth Hills region. The Victoria Australian rules football team, known colloquially as the Big V, is the state representative side of Victoria, Australia, in the sport of Australian rules football. The Big V has a proud history, dominating the first 100 years of intercolonial-interstate football, and being the most successful state in State of Origin. After the change to State of Origin rules, the results with the other main Australian football states became more even. Sandover Medal
The Sandover Medal is an Australian rules football award, given annually since 1921 to the fairest and best player in the West Australian Football League. The award was donated by Alfred Sandover M.B.E., a prominent Perth hardware merchant and benefactor. Voting system After each match, the three field umpires (those umpires who control the flow of the game) confer and award a 3, 2 and 1 point vote to the players they regard as the best, second best, and third best in the match respectively. Voting wasn't always done this way. From 1985-2018, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point votes were given, from 1930–1984, 3, 2 and 1 point votes were given, and prior to 1930 there was only one vote per game. Just like similar "fairest and best" awards, for example the Brownlow and Magarey Medals, if a player is suspended for a reportable offence throughout the season then they become ineligible to win the award. Dennis Cometti
Dennis John Cometti (born 26 March 1949) is an Australian retired sports commentator, player and coach of Australian rules football. In a career spanning 51 years, his smooth voice, dry humour and quick wit became his trademark. Until his retirement, he remained the only television broadcaster to have spanned the entire duration of the AFL national competition, serving the Seven Network, Nine Network and Broadcom. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2019 Australia Day Honours. John Todd (footballer)
John Herbert Todd (born 21 May 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). Todd won the Sandover Medal in his debut season at just 17 years of age, but his playing career was cut short by a serious knee injury in his second season. While still a player, Todd embarked on a coaching career that spanned over 700 games and lasted over four decades. He became only the second coach to guide three WAFL clubs (, South Fremantle and ) to premierships, and led to its first finals appearance in 1988. Todd is an inaugural Legend of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Coaches section of the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
