Tom Oren
Tom Oren (born November 4, 1994) is an Israeli jazz pianist and winner of the 2018 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition. Oren was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. He graduated from Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts, Givatayim and from the Arison Campus of the Arts, Tel Aviv. He is a graduate of the Israeli Conservatory of Music, Tel Aviv, with honors. He studied for two years at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, finishing in 2015. Oren went to the United States to Boston's Berklee College of Music with a scholarship for four years of study starting in 2012. Oren has been a member of the Eli Degibri Quartet since 2017. In 2018 Oren won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition after competitive performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz
The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz is a non-profit music education organization founded in 1986. Before 2019, it was known as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, but was then renamed after its longtime board chairman, Herbie Hancock. The institute has held its International Jazz Competition annually since 1987 and offered a full scholarship graduate-level college program since 1995. It organizes free jazz education programs in public schools throughout the United States and the world “to encourage imaginative thinking, creativity, a positive self-image and respect for one’s own and others’ cultural heritage.” It is also the lead non-profit responsible for coordinating the annual celebration of International Jazz Day, a United Nations initiative. "Just One of Those Things" is a popular song written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical ''Jubilee''. Porter had written the score for ''Jubilee'' while on an extended sea cruise in the early part of 1935: however, in September 1935 while he was visiting a friend's farm in Ohio with ''Jubilees librettist Moss Hart, the latter mentioned that the play's second act required an additional song, and Porter had "Just One of Those Things" completed by the following morning (he had previously used the title for a song intended for but not featured in the 1930 musical ''The New Yorkers''—apart from the title the two songs are distinct). Porter's original lyric lacked an adjective for the line "a trip to the moon on '' gossamer'' wings": "gossamer" would be suggested by his friend, Ed Tauch.
