Tom Newbery
Thomas Guy Newbery (23 March 1914 – 30 October 1984) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Newbery was born at Mackay, Queensland, the son of Ernest Newbery and his wife Maude (née Nicholson). He was educated at West Plane Creek, Labornum Grove, Langdons Creek and Sarina State Schools, and All Souls' School, Charters Towers. After finishing his education he became a sugarcane farmer. On 1 March 1939, he married Jessie Lambert and together they had a son and two daughters. Newbery died in October 1984 and was accorded a state funeral, which was held at the St Luke's Anglican Church, Sarina. Public career Newbery was a long-term a member of the Sarina Shire Council, serving for over 28 years. He was Deputy Chairman of the shire from 1955 until 1964, and Chairman from 1964 until 1974. Fitzgerald Inquiry
The Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct (the Fitzgerald Inquiry; 1987–1989) into Queensland Police corruption was a judicial inquiry presided over by Tony Fitzgerald QC. The inquiry resulted in the resignation of Queensland's premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the calling of two by-elections, the jailing of three former ministers and the Police Commissioner (who also lost his knighthood). It also contributed to the end of the National Party of Australia's 32-year run as the governing political party in Queensland. History The inquiry was established in response to a series of articles by reporter Phil Dickie in ''The Courier-Mail'' about high-level police corruption, followed by a ''Four Corners'' television report on the same issue, by Chris Masters, entitled "The Moonlight State", which aired on 11 May 1987. Frank Bischof
Francis Erich Bischof, (12 October 1904 – 28 August 1979) was the Queensland Police Commissioner in Australia from January 1958 until his resignation, on 13 February 1969, amidst allegations of corruption. Early life Frank Bischof was born at Gowrie Junction, Queensland, on 12 October 1904, the fourth child in a family of nine, and grew up on a dairy farm. He attended Toowoomba Grammar School, and worked in a cheese factory before joining the Queensland Police Force in 1925. He married Dorothy Gledhill on 22 February 1930 at St Mary's Anglican Church in Alderley, Brisbane. Queensland Police Stationed with the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in Brisbane, he was promoted to sergeant in 1939 and inspector in 1949. Ray Whitrod
Raymond Wells Whitrod, (16 April 1915 – 11 July 2003) was an Australian police officer and criminologist. He was considered a world leader in the way society treats victims of crime. He was known as a man of high professional standards, with a commitment to justice, equity and integrity. He became best known for his term as Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service, resigning in protest in 1976 at the corruption then endemic in Queensland, and in particular over the appointment by the Premier of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, of Terry Lewis as Assistant Commissioner. Terry Lewis (police Officer)
Terence Murray Lewis, GM (born 29 February 1928) is a former Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service who was convicted and jailed for corruption and forgery as a result of the Fitzgerald Inquiry. He was stripped of his knighthood and two other awards in consequence. Lewis has continued to protest his innocence, and sued his former lawyers and pursued appeals. The last of his appeals failed in August 2005.. Policing career Early career Lewis was inducted as a police officer in 1949. As a senior constable, Lewis was in charge of the Juvenile Aid Bureau.
