Tom Murphy (athlete)
Thomas Joseph Murphy (born November 21, 1935) is an American former middle distance runner, who represented his native country at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the men's 800 metres event at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts.
