Tom McDonald (born 1954) was the United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 1997 to 2001. A graduate of George Washington University and the University of Minnesota Law School, McDonald is now an attorney in the Washington, D.C. office of the Columbus, Ohio firm of Vorys Sater. United States Ambassador To Zimbabwe
The first United States ambassador to Zimbabwe was appointed on May 23, 1980, after the Republic of Zimbabwe replaced the previous white-minority government of Rhodesia, and its successor Zimbabwe-Rhodesia (1979–1980). The Republic of Zimbabwe came into being on April 18, 1980. The United States immediately diplomatic recognition, recognized the new nation and moved to establish diplomacy, diplomatic relations. An embassy in Harare was established on April 18, 1980—independence day for Zimbabwe. Jeffrey Davidow was appointed as chargé d'affaires ''ad interim'' pending the appointment of an ambassador. In 2009 he was nominated to become U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs by President Barack Obama.
