Tom McCarthy (ice Hockey, Born 1960)
Thomas Joseph McCarthy (July 31, 1960 – April 13, 2022) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played nine seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins from 1979 to 1988. He featured in the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals with the North Stars and the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals with the Bruins. After retiring as a player, he became a part-owner of the Espanola Express hockey team in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). Early life McCarthy was born in Toronto, on July 31, 1960. He was the first overall pick in the 1977 OMJHL Midget Draft, making him one of two players drafted ahead of Wayne Gretzky. Oshawa Generals general manager Sherwood Bassin chose McCarthy over Gretzky primarily because Gretzky had made it known prior to the draft he only intended to play one season in the OHL before signing with the World Hockey Association. Tom McCarthy (trade Unionist)
Thomas McCarthy (19 September 1899) was a British Irish trade unionist, who became prominent as a leader of dockers in England. Born in Limehouse to parents from Ireland, McCarthy initially worked at a local shipbuilding yard. This industry was in decline, and he moved to become a carman, before finding work as a stevedore at the local docks. He joined the Amalgamated Stevedores' Labour Protection League in 1879, and in 1885, he was elected as the union's secretary. Thomas McCarthy (1832 – September 23, 1870) was a businessman and political figure in Canada East, later Quebec, Canada. He was a Conservative Party of Canada (historical), Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada representing Richelieu (federal electoral district), Richelieu from 1867 to 1870. He was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1832, the son of John McCarthy, and came to Canada in 1839. McCarthy was a shipbuilder in the Sorel, Quebec, Sorel region in partnership with his brothers Daniel and John. He served on the council for Sorel in 1860, 1862, 1863 and 1865. McCarthy died at Sorel in 1870 while still in office. Tom McCarthy (born July 5, 1968) is an American sports broadcaster. He is the play-by-play announcer for Philadelphia Phillies television broadcasts and also calls National Football League games for Westwood One. He calls select NFL, NBA and college basketball games on CBS beginning in 2014. McCarthy previously served as the play-by-play voice of Saint Joseph's University men's and women's basketball teams. Thomas Patrick McCarthy (August 1905 – June 1968) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Limerick senior team. McCarthy was born on 10 August 1905 in Kilfinane, County Limerick, to Thomas McCarthy and Nora Fitzgerald. His great uncle was Irish Nationalist James Gubbins Fitzgerald. McCarthy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Limerick senior team. He made his debut in the 1927-28 Thomond Feis. Thomas Francis Patrick McCarthy (September 15, 1934 – January 20, 1992) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played four seasons in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins between 1956 and 1961. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1955 to 1973, was spent in various minor leagues. McCarthy was selected in the 15th round of the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, going 88th overall. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. After his father abandoned the family, he was raised by his grandfather in a poor Gullah community near Savannah.
