Tom Irwin (dual Player)
Thomas Irwin (1 July 1873 – 22 February 1956) was an Irish people, Irish Gaelic footballer, hurling, hurler, referee and Gaelic games administrator who played in various positions for both Cork GAA, Cork senior teams. One of the earliest dual players at the highest levels, he first played in All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1892, 1892 and was a regular member of both teams until his retirement in All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1902, 1902. He won one All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland hurling medal, three Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster hurling medals and three Munster Senior Football Championship, Munster football medals. At club level Irwin was a multiple county club championship medalist with Redmonds GAA, Redmond's and Nils GAA, Nils. In retirement from playing Irwin served as a dual inter-county referee at the highest levels while also serving as a Gaelic games administrator with the Cork County Board. References ... Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Originally a monastic settlement, Cork was expanded by Viking invaders around 915. Its charter was granted by Prince John in 1185. Dual Players
Dual player or dual star is a term used in Hiberno-English to describe someone who competes in multiple sports — for example, in Victorian Ireland, cricket and hurling. The term today in Gaelic games typically describes a male player who plays both Gaelic football and hurling or, if a female player, a player of ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. The player does not necessarily have to play at the same standard in both sports. The number of dual stars at county level has decreased recently due to the increasing demands placed upon the best players of both sports. All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. History The first Championship to be held featured club teams who represented their respective counties after their county championship. The 21 a-side final was between Commercials of Limerick and Young Irelands of Louth. A referee is an official, in a variety of sports and competition, responsible for enforcing the rules of the sport, including sportsmanship decisions such as ejection. The official tasked with this job may be known by a variety of other titles depending on the sport, including umpire, judge, arbiter (chess), commissaire, or technical official (by the International Olympic Committee). Referees may be assisted by umpires, linesmen, timekeepers, touch judges, or video review officials.
