Tom Hickey (politician)
Thomas Valentine Hickey (14 February 1933 – 2 January 2020) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Cape St. Francis in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1966 to 1986 as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. The son of Thomas and Mary Hickey, he was born at Outer Cove and was educated there and at Memorial University. Hickey married Dorothy Grace Wall; the couple had one daughter; SuzAnne Valentina. He worked for the Department of Social Services, was a sales representative for British American Oil and then was the owner of a groceteria. He also worked at the United States Air Force base at Fort Pepperrell. Hickey served on the town council for Placentia. In 1963 he founded and served as first president of the Placentia Regatta. Newfoundland And Labrador House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the Unicameralism, unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building (Newfoundland and Labrador), Confederation Building in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Monarchy in Newfoundland and Labrador, King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. Gulf Canada
Gulf Canada was a Canadian integrated petroleum company that existed between 1944 and 2001. Gulf Oil Corporation began operating in Canada in 1942, and two years later formed a Canadian subsidiary called the Canadian Gulf Oil Company. In 1956 Canadian Gulf Oil merged with the British American Oil Company (of which Gulf Oil was the controlling shareholder) and until 1969 operated under the British American name. In 1969 British American amalgamated with its subsidiaries into a new company called Gulf Oil Canada Limited. During the 1970s and 1980s, Gulf Canada was one of the country's "big four" oil companies along with Imperial, Shell Canada, and Texaco Canada. Gulf Canada remained in existence after the 1985 acquisition of Gulf Oil by Chevron. However, in 1986 Gulf Canada sold its retail operations, which included 900 gas stations, to Petro-Canada. Library Of Parliament
The Library of Parliament (french: Bibliothèque du Parlement) is the main information repository and research resource for the Parliament of Canada. The main branch of the library sits at the rear of the Centre Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. The library survived the Centre Block#Great fire, 1916 fire that destroyed Centre Block. The library has been augmented and renovated several times since its construction in 1876, the last between 2002 and 2006, though the form and decor remain essentially authentic. The building today serves as a National symbols of Canada, Canadian icon, and appears on the obverse of the Canadian ten-dollar bill. ''The Western Star'' is a weekly newspaper published Wednesdays in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and also serving Stephenville and the Bay of Islands, Bay St. George and Humber Valley areas. The paper was founded in 1900 in Curling, as a weekly newspaper. It became a daily paper in 1954 and was the only daily newspaper in western Newfoundland. It also had readers outside its main coverage area in Labrador. On April 13, 2017, Transcontinental announced that it had sold all of its newspapers in Atlantic Canada to SaltWire Network, a newly formed parent company of ''The Chronicle Herald''. Pepperrell Air Force Base
Pepperrell Air Force Base, previously known as Fort Pepperrell, is a decommissioned United States military base located in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada which operated from 1941 to 1961. The base was named in honour of Sir William Pepperrell (1696–1759) of Kittery, Maine, commander of a force of 4,200 soldiers and sailors aboard 90 ships, who captured the French seaport at Louisbourg after a 46-day siege on June 16, 1745. Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located within a 10 minutes' drive from downtown St. John's preceding the Town of Torbay on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula. History The area encompassing Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove is within the boundaries of lands granted to the London and Bristol Company in 1610.
