Tom Healy (hurler)
Tom or Tommy Healy (1855 in Littleton, County Tipperary – ?) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Thurles Sarsfields and was a member of the very first Tipperary inter-county team in 1887. Tommy Healy was born in Coolcroo, Littleton, County Tipperary in 1855. He was noted as a fine sportsperson and represented his native Thurles hurling club in the 1880s. In 1887 he won a Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship title with the club, and was consequently picked, with the rest of the team, to represent Tipperary in the inaugural All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Healy's most notable moment came when he scored the very first goal in an All-Ireland Hurling Final. This happened in the 1887 final, when Tipperary played against Galway. Littleton, County Tipperary
Littleton () is a village in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is within the townlands of Ballybeg and Ballydavid, about northeast of Cashel and to the southeast of Thurles. By-passed by the M8 in December 2008, Littleton lies at a crossroads on the R639 road. Its population was 394 at the 2016 census. It is in the barony of Eliogarty. Littleton is closely associated with Bord na Móna, a semi-state company that harvests peat in the nearby complex of raised bogs. Littleton is also home to the 'Moycarkey Band', the Seán Treacy Pipe Band. History St. Ruadhan of Lorrha founded a monastery on a raised island in the middle of the bog at Littleton. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Thurles Sarsfields GAA
Thurles Sarsfields is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred in the town of Thurles at Semple Stadium. The club was founded in 1881 and is the most honoured club in the history of the county championship with 36 County Titles. Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship
The Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the FBD Insurance Tipperary County Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1887 for the top hurling teams in the county of Tipperary in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Semple Stadium in October. The prize for the winning team is the Dan Breen Cup. Initially played as a knock-out competition on a divisional basis, the championship currently features a group stage followed by a knock-out stage. Jim Stapleton
James Stapleton (1863 – 18 March 1949) was an Irish people, Irish hurling, hurler who played as a forward for the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary senior team. Stapleton made his first appearance for the team during the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1899, inaugural championship and was a regular member of the team for just one season. During his brief inter-county career he won one All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medal. Stapleton captained the team to the All-Ireland title in 1887.
