Tom Burgess (Newfoundland Politician)
Thomas William Burgess (born August 21, 1933) is an Irish-born former Newfoundland and Labrador politician. He represented Labrador West from 1966 to 1972 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of John Burgess, he was born in Bray, County Wicklow and was educated at the Catholic University School and St. Mary's School in Dublin. He worked in construction and various other occupations in England, Wales, Africa, Australia and New Zealand before becoming a Canadian resident in 1958. He came to Labrador City with the Iron Ore Company of Canada, joining the United Steelworkers of America in 1960. Burgess married Rhyna McLean; the couple had one daughter. In 1966, he was elected to the Newfoundland assembly as a Liberal. In 1969, he joined the New Labrador Party. Labrador Party
The Labrador Party (or New Labrador Party) was the name of two political parties in Newfoundland advocating the interests of the region of Labrador, Canada. New Labrador Party (1969–1975) The party was founded in 1969, by Tom Burgess, a disaffected former Liberal MHA who crossed the floor to become an independent when he was passed over for a cabinet seat. He was re-elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from Labrador West in the 1971 provincial election under the New Labrador Party banner. The election returned a hung parliament. Mount Pearl
Mount Pearl is the third-largest settlement and second-largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The city is located southwest of St. John's, on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. Mount Pearl is the fourth largest settlement in the province and is part of the St. John's metropolitan area, the 20th largest metropolitan area in Canada. History Mount Pearl dates back to 1829, when Commander James Pearl and his wife, Lady Anne Pearl, arrived in Newfoundland with a Crown grant of one thousand acres (4 km²) of land, a reward for Commander Pearl's 27 years of distinguished service in the Royal Navy. Frank Moores
Frank Duff Moores (February 18, 1933 – July 10, 2005) served as the second premier of Newfoundland. He served as leader of the Progressive Conservatives from 1972 until his retirement in 1979. Moores was also a successful businessman in both the fishing industry and federal lobbying. Early life and education Born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Moores was educated at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario. He then briefly attended Boston University in the fall of 1951, but left two months later after an argument with one of his professors. He later worked briefly in the Boston fish industry and then returned to Newfoundland, where he worked in his father's fish plant. His father, Silas Moores, was a wealthy businessman in that industry. The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a political party in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party is the provincial branch, and affiliate of the federal Liberal Party of Canada. It has served as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador since December 14, 2015. The NL Liberals were re-elected to a majority government in the 2021 provincial election. Origins The party originated in 1948 as the Newfoundland Confederate Association. Labrador City
Labrador City is a town in western Labrador (part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador), near the Quebec border. With a population of 7,412 as of 2021, it is the second-largest population centre in Labrador, behind Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Neighbouring Labrador City is Wabush, a smaller town with a population of approximately 1,964 as of 2021. Together, the "twin towns" are known as Labrador West. In the 1960s, Labrador City was founded to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, and iron ore mining continues to be the primary industry in the town.
