Tom Blake (footballer)
Thomas Joseph Blake (15 July 1872 – 3 May 1935) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He captained Carlton in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) during 1895 and 1896, but relinquished the captaincy to Jimmy Aitken after the club's entrance to the VFL. A year after leaving Carlton, St Kilda requested his experience after failing to win a match in the 1898 season. He went on to play 24 games with St Kilda across two seasons before leaving the league. His brother James played alongside him in the VFA but did not make an appearance in the VFL. George Bernard Blake (4 September 1878 – 6 February 1946) was an Australian sportsman who competed in the 1906 Intercalated Games and 1908 Summer Olympics as a long distance runner. Michael Patrick Blake (13 September 1874 – 2 January 1931) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Biography Early life and family Blake was born in St Kilda, Victoria on 13 September 1874, one of 11 children to Irish emigrants John Blake and Ellen Coen, who came from Galway. He had seven brothers, many of whom were also gifted sportsmen, two of them played in the VFL. Prahran (), also pronounced colloquially as Pran, is an inner suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 5 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. 1898 VFL Season
The 1898 VFL season was the second season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 14 May until 24 September, and comprised a 14-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring all eight clubs. The premiership was won by the Fitzroy Football Club for the first time, after it defeated by 15 points in the inaugural 1898 VFL Grand Final. Jimmy Aitken
James Munroe Aitken (15 May 1872 – 27 August 1944) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Aitken was Carlton's inaugural VFL captain when the league formed for the 1897 season, replacing Tom Blake. He had been the club's vice-captain the previous season when they competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), and was elected captain before the start of the season, with a twelve to eight majority vote. After a disappointing run of form, just making the side to play against South Melbourne and Melbourne, he was left out of the team and replaced by Ernie Walton.
