Toledano ( he, טולדנו, lad, טולידאנו) is a family name derived from the city of Toledo, Spain. Bearers of the name can be found mainly in Spanish-speaking countries, the United States, France, Canada, Israel, and Australia. The surname is also found among Sephardi Jews in their various diasporas, indicating possible ancestry traced back to Toledo, Spain. The Toledano name was also retained among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries. The Jewish Toledanos were expelled from Spain in 1492. After the expulsion from Spain the Toledanos went to Safed, Salonika, and Morocco. Ralph de Toledano (August 17, 1916 – February 3, 2007) was an American writer in the conservative movement in the United States throughout the second half of the 20th century. A friend of Richard Nixon, he was a journalist and editor of ''Newsweek'' and the ''National Review'', and the author of 26 books, including two novels and a book of poetry. Besides his political contributions, he also wrote about music, particularly jazz. Avi Toledano ( he, אבי טולדנו; born April 4, 1948) is an Israeli singer and songwriter. Biography Avraham ("Avi") Toledano was born in Meknes, Morocco to a Jewish family. At the age of 5, the family relocated to Casablanca, where Toledano attended the Alliance Israélite Universelle. During his teenage years, he was involved in Labour Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, which was illegal in Morocco at the time. In 1965, at the age of 16, he immigrated to Israel with other members of Hashomer Hatzair, and settled in Kibbutz Ruhama in the Negev. Career Toledano debuted as a singer as a teenager, after sending demo tapes to the radio show "First Returns" ("תשואות ראשונות"). He is president of the Puig group’s fashion division; president of the Fédération française de la Couture, du Prêt à Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode; and president of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Samuel Toledano (August 15, 1929 - July 22, 1996) was a Spanish Jewish community leader and lawyer. As a descendant of an old Jewish family from medieval Toledo, Samuel (Sam) Toledano was a secretary-general and president of Spain's Jewish federation of Israelite communities, later known as the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) from 1982–1994. Maria Pia de Saxe-Coburgo e Bragança (March 13, 1907 – May 6, 1995), also known by her literary pseudonym Hilda de Toledano, was a Portuguese writer and journalist who claimed to be the illegitimate daughter of King Carlos I of Portugal. From 1932 she also claimed the right to the title of Duke of Braganza, Duchess of Braganza and to be the rightful List of Portuguese monarchs, heiress to the throne of Portugal. Maria Pia of Braganza claimed that King Carlos I legitimized her through a royal decree and placed her in the line of succession, however no proof was presented to demonstrate this and the King similarly did not have the personal authority to do so.
