Tokyo Rose (film)
''Tokyo Rose'' is a 1946 American war thriller film directed by Lew Landers and starring Byron Barr, Osa Massen, Donald Douglas and Keye Luke. It was produced by Pine-Thomas Productions and was released on February 8, 1946, by Paramount Pictures. It is a completely fictitious story inspired by the Tokyo Rose World War II propaganda broadcasts, and is not based on the real story of Iva Toguri.Close p.290 Synopsis Pete Sherman an American prisoner of war being held in Japan during World War II is enlisted by his captors to take part in broadcasts designed to weaken Allied morale. He manages to escape and with the help of a war correspondent from neutral Ireland by impersonating a Swedish journalist killed in a recent bombing raid. He is also aided by Greta, the sister of the dead man. Put in touch with the anti-government underground, and he hatches a plan to kidnap Tokyo Rose. Lew Landers
Lew Landers (born Louis Friedlander, January 2, 1901 – December 16, 1962) was an American independent film and television director. Biography Born as Louis Friedlander in New York City, Lew Landers began his movie career as an actor. In 1914, he appeared in two features: D.W. Griffith's drama ''The Escape (1914 film), The Escape'' and the comedy short ''Admission – Two Pins'', under his birth name. He became an assistant director at Universal Pictures in 1922. He began making films in the 1930s, one of his early ones being the Boris Karloff / Bela Lugosi thriller ''The Raven (1935 film), The Raven'' (1935). After directing a few more features, he changed his name to Lew Landers and directed more than 100 films in a variety of genres, including Westerns, comedies, and horror movies. James Millican
James Millican (February 17, 1911 – November 24, 1955) was an American actor with over 200 film appearances mostly in western movies. Millican was the son of Fred S. Millican, a circus owner, and Dorothy Millican. Millican was a close associate of cowboy star "Wild" Bill Elliott, staging a number of personal-appearance rodeos on Elliott's behalf. Millican was sent to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's dramatic school directly after graduating from University of Southern California. William Challee
William John Challee (April 6, 1904 – March 11, 1989) was an American actor. Biography Challee was born in Chicago and was a student at Lake View High School. Challee appeared on Broadway by 1926 and by 1931 in early Group Theatre productions. He married actress Ruth Nelson on August 2, 1931; they divorced on August 13, 1937. The two appeared in the 1947 film ''The Sea of Grass'', in supporting roles, after they were divorced. In 1937 Challee staged a suite of one-act plays at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem, under the heading ''Plays of the Sea''. The suite consisted of the Eugene O'Neill plays ''Bound East for Cardiff'', ''In the Zone'', ''The Long Voyage Home'' and ''Moon of the Caribbees''. Richard Loo (October 1, 1903 – November 20, 1983) was an American film actor who was one of the most familiar Asian character actors in American films of the 1930s and 1940s. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1931 and 1982. Early life Chinese by ancestry and Hawaiian by birth, Loo spent his youth in Hawaii, then moved to California as a teenager. Irish Neutrality During World War II
The policy of Irish neutrality during World War II was adopted by the Oireachtas at the instigation of the Taoiseach Éamon de Valera upon the outbreak of World War II in Europe. It was maintained throughout the conflict, in spite of several German air raids by aircraft that missed their intended British targets, and attacks on Ireland's shipping fleet by Allies and Axis alike. While the possibilities of not only a German but also a British invasion were discussed in the Dáil, and either eventuality was prepared for, the most detailed preparations were done with the Allies under Plan W.
