Toktamış Ateş
Toktamış Ateş (4 April 1944 – 19 January 2013) was a Turkish academician, political commentator, columnist and writer. He was professor of political sciences at Istanbul University. Biography Toktamış Ateş was born in Istanbul. After graduating from St. George's Austrian Secondary School and Vefa High School, he was admitted to Istanbul University Faculty of Economics and received his BA degree in 1967. He started his academic career as a research assistant at department of political sciences in Istanbul University Faculty of Economics. He earned Doctor of Science degree with a thesis entitled "Kuruluş Dönemi Osmanlı Toplumunun Siyasal Yapısı" ("Political Structure of the Ottoman Society in Establishment Period") in 1969 and became an associate professor (''doçent'') in 1974 at the same faculty. Vefa High School Alumni
Vefa is part of the district of Fatih in Istanbul, and lies inside what was once the old walled city of Constantinople. It lies roughly northwest of the eastern section of the Aqueduct of Valens, and is rich in monuments, both Byzantine and Ottoman. It takes its name from the Muslim saint (wali) Shaykh Ebu’l Vefa who is buried locally in his own mosque and dergah. Vefa lies to the east of busy Atatürk Bulvari, the main road pushed through the old city by the French architect Henri Prost in the 1950s. Immediately to its north is the rundown area of Küçükpazarı while to the east is the Süleymaniye district around the huge Süleymaniye Mosque complex. Buses plough up and down Atatürk Bulvari linking Vefa to Taksim, Eminönü, Fatih and Beyazıt. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Merkezefendi Cemetery
The Merkezefendi Cemetery ( tr, Merkezefendi Mezarlığı) is a burial ground situated in Merkezefendi neighborhood of Zeytinburnu district on the European part of Istanbul, Turkey. The neighborhood and the cemetery are named after Merkez Efendi, an Ottoman Islamic scholar and Sufi (1463–1552). Many renowned intellectuals, writers and artists rest in this old cemetery covering an area of . The cemetery was established in the 16th century with the construction of the tomb of Merkez Efendi at this location. It was extended in the 1950s, and another cemetery, the Kozlu Cemetery was established away. The cemetery was fully renovated in 2007. At the time of the burial of former Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan in 2011, a comprehensive maintenance work was carried out at the cemetery. Fatih Mosque
The large Fatih Mosque ( tr, Fatih Camii, "Conqueror's Mosque" in English) is an Ottoman mosque off Fevzi Paşa Caddesi in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. The original mosque was constructed between 1463 and 1470 on the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles. Seriously damaged in the 1766 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1771 to a different design. It is named after the Ottoman sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, known in Turkish as ''Fatih Sultan Mehmed'', who conquered Constantinople in 1453. The Sahn-ı Seman Medrese, once an important center for the study of theology, law, medicine, astronomy, physics and mathematics, formed part of the Fatih Mosque. It was founded by the Turkic astronomer Ali Qushji who had been invited by Mehmed to his court in Istanbul. The mosque complex was completely restored in 2009 and again ten years later.
