Danish (; , ) is a North Germanic language spoken by about six million people, principally in and around Denmark. Communities of Danish speakers are also found in Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the northern German region of Southern Schleswig, where it has minority language status. Minor Danish-speaking communities are also found in Norway, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. Claus Toksvig
Claus Bertel Toksvig (21 October 1929 – 5 November 1988) was a Danish journalist and broadcaster who, as the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's first permanent foreign correspondent, is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest figures in Danish broadcasting history. In later life he turned his attention to politics. In 1984, he was elected as a member of the European Parliament and served briefly as one of the European Parliament's fourteen Vice-Presidents. Journalism and broadcasting Commencing with five years spent working on the BBC World Service's Danish-language broadcasts, in London, Toksvig held numerous appointments in journalism and broadcasting. He was part of the original team of reporters on TV Avisen, the first daily evening television news programme broadcast by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) in 1965; and in 1967 he was posted to New York City as DR's first ever permanent foreign correspondent. Sandi Toksvig
Sandra Birgitte Toksvig (; ; born 3 May 1958) is a Danish-British writer, comedian and broadcaster on British radio, stage and television. She is also a political activist, having co-founded the Women's Equality Party in 2015. She has written plays, novels and books for children. In 1994, she came out as a lesbian. Toksvig took over from Stephen Fry as host of the BBC television quiz show '' QI'' in 2016 (series 'N'), having been a guest a number of times, and spent ten years hosting ''The News Quiz'' on BBC Radio 4. From 2017 to 2020 she was co-presenter of ''The Great British Bake Off'', alongside comedian Noel Fielding. In 2020, she stepped down and was replaced by Matt Lucas. Signe Toksvig
Signe Toksvig (1891–1983) was a Danes, Danish writer. Her articles were published in ''The New York Times'', the ''Nation'', ''The Atlantic'', and other periodicals. She also published several books, including biographies of Hans Christian Andersen and Emanuel Swedenborg. Her life and work, and obstacles she encountered, has also been the focus of scholarship by others. All her writings were in English. At age 14, Toksvig emigrated with her family from Denmark to the United States. She graduated from Cornell in 1916, and then worked as an assistant editor at ''The New Republic''. In 1918, she married the journal's founder, Francis Hackett, an Irish writer and literary critic. They moved to Ireland in 1926 and lived there until 1937, when they moved to Denmark. They spent the Second World War in the United States, but returned to Europe and Denmark in the 1950s. She is the great aunt of Sandi Toksvig.
