Toilers Of The Sea (1923 Film)
''Toilers of the Sea'' is a lost 1923 American silent drama film directed by Roy William Neill and starring Lucy Fox, Holmes Herbert and Horace Tesseron. It is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel of the same title. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Captain Jean and his daughter Hélène live in an Italian fishing hamlet. Captain André persuades him to induce the villagers to invest their savings in a project to purchase trading vessels. André embezzles the money and hides it in the volcanic crater of Mount Etna. Sandro, in love with Hélène, trails André to the mountains. A fight takes place, André is killed, and Sandro takes the money back to the villagers. Hélène and Sandro then wed. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for directing the last eleven of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Studios. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. His birth name was Roland de Gostrie. Neill began directing silent films in 1917 and went on to helm 111 films, 55 of them silent. Although most of Neill's films were low-budget B-movies, he was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of ''film noir'' in the late 1940s. Lucius Junius Henderson (June 8, 1861 – February 18, 1947) was an American silent film Film director, director and actor of the early silent period involved in more than 70 film productions. Biography Born in Aledo, Illinois, Henderson was a classically trained musician who later attended Harvard College. He began stage-acting in the early-1880s and later supported both Mesdames Modjeska and Janauschek in repertory. He entered film with the Thanhouser Company in late 1910 in film, 1910, functioning as chiefly a director. In the autumn of 1913, Henderson led the Thanhouser company of players to Los Angeles. But while the unit quickly returned to New Rochelle, New York, Henderson remained behind to direct for Majestic (video game), Majestic and the Long Beach-located California Motion Picture Company.
