Toi Te Rito Maihi
Toi Te Rito Maihi (1937 - 10 December 2022) was a New Zealand weaver, printmaker, painter, educator and writer. She belonged to Ngāti Ipu, Ngāi Te Apata o Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Hao o Taitokerau and the Bland Family of Yorkshire. Maihi recounted the story of how she learned to weave. She was the only Māori foundation member of the committee of the Ngaruawahia Weaving Hui who was not known as a weaver, and so was generally assigned administrative tasks. Eva Anderson noticed Maihi's frustration and when a weaver had to leave the hui and abandon her partially-completed whakairo kete, it was Anderson who invited Maihi to finish it. Late at night when she was still weaving, Eddie Maxwell showed her how to finish it and sat with her until her first whakairo kete was completed. Ngāti Kahungunu
Ngāti Kahungunu is a Māori iwi located along the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The iwi is traditionally centred in the Hawke's Bay and Wairārapa regions. The tribe is organised into six geographical and administrative divisions: ''Wairoa'', ''Te Whanganui-ā-Orotū'', ''Heretaunga'', ''Tamatea'', ''Tāmaki-nui-a Rua'' and ''Wairarapa''. It is the third largest iwi in New Zealand by population, with 61,626 people (9.2% of the Māori population) identifying as Ngāti Kahungunu in the 2013 census. Ngāpuhi People
Ngāpuhi (or Ngā Puhi) is a Māori iwi associated with the Northland region of New Zealand and centred in the Hokianga, the Bay of Islands, and Whangārei. According to the 2018 New Zealand census, the estimated population of Ngāpuhi is 165,201. This compares to 125,601 in 2001, 102,981 in 2006, and 122,214 in 2013. It is formed from 150 hapū/subtribes, with 55 marae. Despite such diversity, the people of Ngāpuhi maintain their shared history and self-identity. Te Rūnanga ā Iwi o Ngāpuhi, based in Kaikohe, administers the iwi. The Rūnanga acts on behalf of the iwi in consultations with the New Zealand Government. It also ensures the equitable distribution of benefits from the 1992 fisheries settlement with the Government, and undertakes resource-management and education initiatives. Christina Wirihana
Christina Hurihia Wirihana (b 1949) is a New Zealand weaver from Te Arawa, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Rangiunora, Ngāti Raukawa, Tainui iwi. Biography Wirihana was born in Rotorua in 1949. Her mother is the renowned weaver Matekino Lawless. Wirihana attributes Dame Rangimarie Hetet, Diggeress Te Kanawa and Emily Schuster as major influences but states her mother as being her most significant teacher. Wirihana was commissioned to weave an installation of harakeke panels that was part of a touring exhibition called ''Anō te Ātaahua - Honouring the Gifts of our Elders'' (2000-2002) that was presented in Auckland, Waikato, Rotorua and Whangārei. Wirihana is currently a senior lecturer at Toihoukura, a Māori visual arts school within the Eastern Institute of Technology, and has previously been fibre tutor at the Waiariki Polytechnic in Rotorua. Kaikohe
Kaikohe is the seat of the Far North District of New Zealand, situated on State Highway 12 about 260 km from Auckland. It is the largest inland town and highest community above sea level in the Northland Region. With a population of over 4000 people it is a shopping and service centre for an extensive farming district and is sometimes referred to as "the hub of the north".
