Tolyatti ( rus, Толья́тти, p=tɐlʲˈjætʲ(ː)ɪ), also known as Togliatti, formerly known as Stavropol (1737–1964), is a city in Samara Oblast, Russia. It is the largest city in Russia which does not serve as the administrative center of a federal subject, or to be one's largest city. Population: The city is best known as the home of Russia's largest car manufacturer AvtoVAZ ( Lada), where it was renamed after Italian communist politician Palmiro Togliatti in 1964. History Tolyatti was founded in 1737 as a fortress called Stavropol () by the Russian statesman Vasily Tatishchev. Informally it was often referred as Stavropol-on-Volga (, ''Stavropol-na-Volge'') to distinguish from Stavropol, a larger city in southwest Russia, although Stavropol-on-Volga was never its official name. The Tatishchev Monument (russian: Памятник Татищеву) is an equestrian statue on the banks of the Volga at Tolyatti. Completed in 1998, it honors Vasily Tatishchev, the founder of Tolyatti. Vasili Tatishchev Vasili Tatishchev (1686–1750) was a prominent Russian statesman, historian, geographer, and economist, and author of ''History of Russia Since Ancient Times'', the first major comprehensive Russian history. He founded the cities of Perm, Russia, Perm and Yekaterinburg and, in 1737, Stavropol-on-Volga – the city which is now Tolyatti. The monument The masonry pedestal uses limestone from the Shiryaevo quarry in Zhigulyovsk. The pedestal is high, the statue itself is bronze and is tall. The statue was cast in Poland and Belarus, with some of the most complex elements being cast in the Czech Republic. Kuybyshev Reservoir or Kuybyshevskoye Reservoir (russian: Ку́йбышевское водохрани́лище, Kuybyshevskoye Vodokhranilishche), sometimes called Samara Reservoir and informally called Kuybyshev Sea, is a reservoir of the middle Volga and lower Kama in Chuvashia, Mari El Republic, Republic of Tatarstan, Samara Oblast and Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russia. The Kuybyshev Reservoir has a surface area of 6,450 km² and a volume of 58 billion cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in Europe and third in the world by surface area. The major cities of Kazan, Ulyanovsk, and Tolyatti are adjacent to the reservoir. The reservoir was created by the dam of Zhiguli Hydroelectric Station (formerly, V.I. TogliattiAzot (russian: ТольяттиАзот) is a Russian chemical company that has been described as the world's largest ammonia producer. It is headquartered in Tolyatti, Russia. Zhiguli ( rus, Жигули, p=ʐɨɡʊˈlʲi) was a designation of cars based on the Fiat 124 manufactured in Russia and the Soviet Union by AvtoVAZ (formerly VAZ) during 1970-2012 and somewhat longer in some places abroad. For the majority of export markets however the cars were sold under the Lada brand. The car was also manufactured in Ukraine and in Egypt. In Egypt the last car of this model was manufactured in 2014. The designation is named after the Zhiguli Mountains by the Volga River, to match the name of the plant ('VAZ' stands for "Volzhsky Avtomobilny Zavod" or "Volga Automobile Plant").
