Todilto Formation
The Todilto Formation is a geologic formation in northern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado. It preserves fossils dating back to the Callovian stage of the middle Jurassic period. Description The formation consists of evaporites. It is divided into a lower calcareous shale (the Luciano Mesa Member) up to thick, and an upper gypsum bed (the Tonque Arroyo Member). Based on varve counts in the Luciano Mesa Member, the formation was laid down in a geologically brief period of time, likely in a salina (a coastal body of saline water) that was replenished both by rivers and by seepage or periodic flooding from the Sundance Sea. The varves show a 10 to 13 year periodicity that is interpreted as the solar sunspot cycle, showing that this cycle has existed for at least 160 million years. The contact with the underlying Entrada Formation is very sharp and may indicate the Todilto Sea formed catastrophically from a breach in a barrier between the basin and the Sundance Sea. The pr ...

A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. San Ysidro, New Mexico
San Ysidro is a village in Sandoval County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 193 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. Description The village is near the junction of U.S. Highway 550 and NM Highway 4, at the south end of the Jemez Valley. The Jemez River runs through San Ysidro, just north of where the Rio Salado River joins the Jemez River. The village has been a farming community since 1699 when Juan Trujillo established a settlement named for San Ysidro, or Saint Isidore the Farmer. The Village was incorporated in 1967. The Albuquerque Basin (or Middle Rio Grande Basin) is a structural basin and ecoregion within the Rio Grande rift in central New Mexico. It contains the city of Albuquerque. Geologically, the Albuquerque Basin is a half-graben that slopes down towards the east to terminate on the Sandia and Manzano mountains. Stromatolites () or stromatoliths () are layered sedimentary formations (microbialite) that are created mainly by photosynthetic microorganisms such as cyanobacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and Pseudomonadota (formerly proteobacteria). Dasycladales
Dasycladales is an order of large unicellular green algae in the class Ulvophyceae. It contains two families, the Dasycladaceae and the Polyphysaceae. These single celled algae are from 2 mm to 200 mm long. They live on substrates in shallow warm (>20°C) euhaline tropical marine waters, usually less than 20 meters deep, and protected from waves. They are very large cells. They are able to attain these sizes without numerous internal cell wells because they build calcium carbonate shells around themselves. They contain only one nucleus in their vegetative stage, which remains in the bottom of the cell in the holdfast at the substrate. The Sundance Sea was an epeiric sea that existed in North America during the mid-to-late Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era. It was an arm of what is now the Arctic Ocean, and extended through what is now western Canada into the central western United States. The sea receded when highlands to the west began to rise.
