Toda Rowing Course
The is a purpose-built rowing venue that hosted the Rowing at the 1964 Summer Olympics, rowing event at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Originally completed in 1939 for the 1940 Summer Olympics that were cancelled due to World War II. After World War II, the venue was left in disrepair. When Tokyo was awarded the 1964 Summer Olympics in 1958, the venue was expanded and reconstructed. For the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympic Games held in July and August 2021 respectively, rowing events were held at the newly constructed Sea Forest Waterway venue. Location and Facilities The course is located on an embankment of the Arakawa River (Kanto), Arakawa River in Saitama Prefecture just north of Tokyo. Access for boat crews to the nearby Arakawa River as an alternative training venue is facilitated by a series of broad steps over the river embankments. The , literally "boat racing" and referred to as BOAT RACE, is a runabout racing event primary held in Japan. It is one of Japan's four , which are sports events where parimutuel betting is legal. Kyōtei was introduced in Japan in April 1952, when the first race was held at Ōmura Kyōtei Stadium in Ōmura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. In April 2010, to promote the sport to a wide variety of people as well as internationally, the Kyotei Promotion Association began referring to the sport as BOAT RACE, and the organization itself was renamed the BOAT RACE Promotion Association. For the 1964 Summer Olympics, a total of thirty-three sports venues were used. Six of the venues were built before the International Olympic Committee awarded the 1964 Games to Tokyo in 1959. This included two venues that hosted the 1958 Asian Games. There were thirteen new, eight temporary, and five reconstructed and/or renovated venues that were used during the event. During the Olympics, wind and weather had issues with two athletic events. After the Olympics, one venue (Osaka Stadium) hosted both a FIFA World Cup and a World Athletics Championship event while another (Tokyo National Stadium) also hosted a World Athletics Championship event. Kaisei Academy (, ) is a Private school, private secondary school for boys located in Arakawa, Tokyo. Overview Kaisei Academy admits approximately 300 students to its junior high school and 400 to its high school each year. The school's motto is a tradition of (), a yojijukugo Japanese phrase meaning “strong and simple”. Its English motto is "The pen is mightier than the sword". History The school was founded in 1871 by Sano Kanae, a lecturer of Western studies, gunnery, and oceanography.
