Toa Payoh GRC
Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) was a group representation constituency that from 1988 to 1997 comprised Kuo Chuan, Boon Teck and Toa Payoh, in the Central Region of Singapore. The MPs of Toa Payoh GRC was Ong Teng Cheong, Davinder Singh, Ho Tat Kin and S. Dhanabalan. Kim Keat Single Member Constituency was absorbed in the 1991 elections. In 1997, the ward was merged along with Thomson GRC to form Bishan–Toa Payoh GRC. Ong would resign in 1993 to contest in the Presidential Election and later become the 5th President of Singapore. The Parliament of Singapore is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Singapore, which governs the country alongside the president of Singapore. Suppiah Dhanabalan ( ta, சு. தனபாலன்; born 8 August 1937), also known as S. Dhanabalan, is a Singaporean former politician who served as Minister for Foreign Affairs between 1980 and 1988. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Kallang SMC between 1976 and 1991, and the Kuo Chuan ward of Toa Payoh GRC between 1991 and 1996. 1991 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 31 August 1991. President Wee Kim Wee dissolved parliament on 14 August 1991 on the advice of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 77 of the 81 seats while Worker's Party won Hougang SMC and the Singapore Democratic Party retain Potong Pasir SMC and captured Nee Soon Central SMC and Bukit Gombak SMC making it the largest representation for opposition-elect in Parliament and was marked as a second and third SMC won by the Singapore Democratic Party and the first time an opposition claimed multiple SMCs. People's Action Party
The People's Action Party (abbreviation: PAP) is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the opposition Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Initially founded as a traditional centre-left party in 1954, the leftist faction was soon expelled from the party in 1961 by Lee Kuan Yew in the midst of Singapore's merger with Malaysia, desiring to move the party's ideology towards the centre after its first electoral victory in 1959. General elections were held in Singapore on 3 September 1988. President of Singapore, President Wee Kim Wee dissolved parliament on 17 August 1988 on the advice of Prime Minister of Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Thomson Group Representation Constituency (GRC) was a defunct four-member constituency that compromises of Bishan East, Serangoon Gardens, Bishan North and Thomson from 1991 to 1997.
