Tjitra
''Tjitra'' (literally ''Image'') is a 1949 Indonesian film directed by Usmar Ismail for the Dutch-owned production house South Pacific. Starring Raden Sukarno, Nila Djuwita, and Raden Ismail, it follows a man named Harsono who takes a woman's virginity then flees to the city, where he is caught up in a murder case. Ismail's directorial debut, ''Tjitra'' was made while its director was still a member of the Indonesian Army. He later disavowed the film, as he felt he had had too little creative input. Plot Harsono (Raden Sukarno) takes the virginity of Suryani (Nila Djuwita) on his family's plantation, then leaves her to live in the city. Whilst Suryani marries Harsono's brother Sutopo (Raden Ismail), Harsono finds himself attracted to a city girl, a flirt named Sandra. When she wrongs him, Harsono strangles her to death. ''Darah dan Doa'' (; Indonesian for ''Blood and Prayer'', released internationally as ''The Long March'') is a 1950 Indonesian war film directed and produced by Usmar Ismail, telling the story of the Siliwangi Division and its leader Captain Sudarto on a march to West Java. Following Ismail's Dutch-produced ''Tjitra'' (1949), ''Darah dan Doa'' is often cited as the first 'Indonesian' film, and the film's first day of shooting – 30 March – is celebrated in Indonesia as National Film Day. Produced on a budget of 350,000 rupiah and intended to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, financial difficulties led production of ''Darah dan Doa'' to almost stop before the director received financial backing. List Of Films Of The Dutch East Indies
A total of 112 fictional films are known to have been produced in the Dutch East Indies (modern day Indonesia) between 1926 and the colony's dissolution in 1949. The earliest motion pictures, imported from abroad, were shown in late 1900, and by the early 1920s imported serials and fictional films were being shown, often with localised names. Dutch companies were also producing documentary films about the Indies to be shown in the Netherlands. The first reports of fictional film production in the Indies date from 1923, although the work in question was not completed. The first locally produced film, '' Loetoeng Kasaroeng'', was directed by L. Heuveldorp and released on 31 December 1926. Between 1926 and 1933 numerous other local productions were released. Usmar Ismail (20 March 1921 – 2 January 1971) was an Indonesian film director, author, journalist and revolutionary of Minangkabau descent. He was widely regarded as the native Indonesian pioneer of the cinema of Indonesia. Biography Ismail was born in 1921 in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. His father, Datuk Tumenggung Ismail, taught at the medical school in Padang. His brother Abu Hanifah was also a well-known revolutionary and writer. Ismail attended ASM-A Yogyakarta and later obtained a B.A. in cinematography from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1952. Ismail initially served in the army during the Dutch colonial rule. He served in the Indonesian army in Yogyakarta. During this time, he was a co-founder of a newspaper called ''Rakyat,'' meaning "people" or "populace" in Bahasa Indonesia. Mohammad Said Hamid Junid (17 June 1902 – after 1962), often credited as Moh. Said HJ, was a film director, storywriter, and actor active in the early cinema of Indonesia. After an unsuccessful career in the theatre he directed some nineteen films, beginning with ''Boenga Sembodja'' in 1942. Early life Said was born in Rengat, Indragiri, Dutch East Indies, on 17 June 1902. He attended school until age seventeen, when he dropped out and joined a shipping agency. Dissatisfied with this, not long afterwards Said became crew on a merchant freighter, a position which he held for several years. Around 1925, after his ship had landed at Surabaya, Said joined the Sandiwara Royal Poesie Indra Bangsawan drama troupe. Over the next seventeen years he would act with numerous troupes and tour the archipelago, once taking several months to work on a farm. Sinematek Indonesia
Sinematek Indonesia, or Sinematek for short, is a film archive located in Jakarta. Established in 1975 by Misbach Yusa Biran and Asrul Sani, the archive was the first in Southeast Asia, and remains the only one in Indonesia. It is home to roughly 2,700 films, mostly Indonesian, and also houses numerous reference works. Since 2001 it has been underfunded. Description Sinematek is located in the Hajji Usmar Ismail Center, a five-story building located on Rasuna Said Street in Kuningan, South Jakarta, and managed by the Usmar Ismail Foundation; it has held this location since 1977. The Sinematek offices are on the fourth floor, while a library containing films and film history is located on the fifth floor; a storage area is found in the basement. Misbach Yusa Biran (11 September 1933 – 11 April 2012) was an Indonesian writer, director and columnist who pioneered the Indonesian film archives. Personal life Biran was born in Rangkasbitung, in the Lebak Regency, to a Minangkabau father and a Bantenese mother. Hal 1. In 1969, he married actress Nani Widjaja.
