Tipton County, Indiana
Tipton County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Indiana, located north of the state capital of Indianapolis. According to the 2010 United States census, 2010 census, it had a population of 15,936, a decrease of 3.9% from its 2000 population of 16,577. Its county seat is Tipton, Indiana, Tipton. The county has four municipal corporation, incorporated towns with a total population of about 7,000, as well as many small unincorporated communities. It is divided into six townships which provide local services. Three Indiana state roads and one U.S. Route cross the county, as do two railroad lines. Before the arrival of non-indigenous settlers in the early 19th century, the area was inhabited by several Native American tribes. John Tipton
John Tipton (August 14, 1786 – April 5, 1839) was from Tennessee and became a farmer in Indiana; an officer in the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe, and veteran officer of the War of 1812, in which he reached the rank of Brigadier General; and politician. He was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1819, and in 1831 as US Senator from the state of Indiana, serving until 1838. He was appointed as US Indian Agent and was selected to lead the militia in removing Menominee's band of Potawatomie in 1838; they were relocated to Kansas, Indian Territory. Biography Tipton, a son of Joshua and Janet Shields Tipton, was born in what is now Sevier County, Tennessee. When Tipton was only 6 years old his father was killed by Native Americans. Groomsville is an unincorporated community in Prairie Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History The area was settled by whites prior to its 1860 founding. Goldsmith is an unincorporated community of Jefferson Township in Tipton County, Indiana, United States, about north of Indianapolis. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Originally called Green Station, Goldsmith was surveyed in 1876. The original landowners were John Wolford, J.A. Teter, McDonald Teter, and Hiram Fulkerson. The town's name was changed to Goldsmith after the founders discovered another town in Indiana named Green Station. It was named after a contractor who helped build the LaFayette, Muncie and Bloomington Railroad. The first home was built in the village, on the west side, by Solomon Wolford. Curtisville, Indiana
Curtisville is an unincorporated community in Madison Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The community is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Curtisville was founded by L.B. Colvin just prior to 1859. Colvin built a sawmill on the railroad that traveled through Madison Township and sold as much lumber as possible so he could secure a train station. Around the same time the first retail operations were opened in Curtisville, in a building on the east side of town that was built by A.B. Newman. Lumber remained the primarily economy for the town. Other services in Curtisville included blacksmithing. In 1859, a post office was installed in Curtisville. Jacob Oldacre served as postmaster. The post office ran until it was discontinued in 1951. Elwood is a city in Madison and Tipton counties in the U.S. state of Indiana. The Madison County portion, which includes most of the city, is part of the Anderson, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion in Tipton County is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,614 at the 2010 census. History Elwood was laid out in 1853 under the name Duck Creek. It was incorporated as a city in 1891. Windfall is a town in Wildcat Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Windfall's population was 697 as of the 2021 census. History Founding Windfall was founded by James B. Fouch in 1853. Fouch platted the land with the goal of securing a train station in order to earn business from the lucrative lumber trade. He built the first sawmill in 1853. A Christian church was built just outside Windfall in 1854. The congregation moved to Windfall in 1866. Sharpsville is a town in Liberty Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The community is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Sharpsville's population is 607. History The town was named after founder E.M. Sharp, who originally was from Washington County, Pennsylvania. Sharp moved to Morgan County, Illinois in 1831, prior to relocating to Jennings County, Indiana in 1838. In spring 1849, he moved to Liberty Township. The town was platted on May 24, 1850, under the assumption that Sharpsville would become the county seat for Tipton Township (which became Tipton). Kempton is a town in Jefferson Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 335 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Kempton was founded in 1875, upon the completion of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad, in the same year. The land was originally owned by David Kemp, the namesake of the town. The first house in Kempton was built by Henry Hays. Hays also operated a grocery out of the building. That year, there was also a post office, an additional store, a blacksmith, and a mill.
