Tint (magazine)
''Tint'' magazine was a quarterly global zine and independent magazine published in Detroit, Michigan. Its motto "Celebrating Women of Every Color" targeted all women, the magazine typically covered issues from the voices of women of color, and often from a politically left-wing perspective. ''Tint'' began as a multicultural women's webzine, first published in 2004 by then college freshman Margarita L. Barry on the campus of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Created as a response to the lack of diverse faces and voices in mainstream women's publications, the first issue of ''Tint'' was launched in PDF format online that May. Barry never intended for the magazine to be a campus publication, though a misquote in the university's weekly newspaper, ''The BG News'', hinted otherwise. Afro-punk (sometimes spelled Afro-Punk, Afropunk or AfroPunk) refers to the participation of African Americans and other Black people in punk and alternative subcultures, especially in the United States. Goapele Mohlabane (; born July 11, 1977), is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter. Her name means ''to move forward'' in Setswana, a Southern African language. Early life Goapele's South African father Douglas Mohlabane was an exiled political activist who struggled against the Apartheid System. Goapele's New York-born Israeli Jewish mother Noa had been attending protests since the age of 12. Noa attended Friends World College and was studying in Nairobi, Kenya, where she met and married Douglas. Goapele and her older brother DJ Namane Mohlabane were raised in a California South African exile community.
