Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Memorial Trophy (usually known colloquially as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman) is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. It is presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust in early December before the postseason bowl games. The award was created by the Downtown Athletic Club in 1935 to recognize "the most valuable college football player east of the Mississippi", and was first awarded to University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger. After the death in October 1936 of the club's athletic director, John Heisman, the award was named in his honor and broadened to include players west of the Mississippi. Steve Owens (American Football)
Loren Everett "Steve" Owens (born December 9, 1947) is a former American football player who played professionally as a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for five seasons in the early 1970s. Owens played college football for the 1969 Oklahoma Sooners football team, University of Oklahoma, and was the 1969 Heisman Trophy winner and an 1969 College Football All-America Team, All-American. He was selected in the first round of the 1970 NFL Draft by the 1970 Detroit Lions season, Detroit Lions, 19th overall, and became the first Lion to rush for over a 1,000 yards in a season. American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end.
