Nantucket, Massachusetts
Nantucket () is an island about south from Cape Cod. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town and County of Nantucket, a combined county/town government that is part of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is the only such consolidated town-county in Massachusetts. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,255, making it the least populated county in Massachusetts. Part of the town is designated the Nantucket CDP, or census-designated place. The region of Surfside on Nantucket is the southernmost settlement in Massachusetts. The name "Nantucket" is adapted from similar Algonquian names for the island, but is very similar to the endonym of the native Nehantucket tribe that occupied the region at the time of European settlement. Nantucket is a tourist destination and summer colony. Due to tourists and seasonal residents, the population of the island increases to at least 50,000 during the summer months. Eric Thornton Turkington (born August 12, 1947) is an American lawyer and politician. He is a former Democratic member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, who represented the Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket District from 1989-2009. Career On November 7, 2006, he won his race against Republican Jim Powell in the 2006 elections. He did not run for reelection in 2008, instead running for Barnstable Register of Probate. Dylan A. Fernandes is a State Representative currently serving in the Massachusetts House representing Martha's Vineyard, the Elizabeth Islands, four precincts of Falmouth, and Nantucket. He has been serving since 2017 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts Fernandes graduated from College of Charleston in 2013. He then served as Maura Healey's political director on her campaign for Attorney General in Massachusetts in 2014. After the election, he worked in the Massachusetts Attorney General's office in civil rights where he worked on cases combatting discrimination. He ran for office in 2016 in a five-way primary and won by 13 percentage points and then faced a three-way general election which he also won by 13 percentage points.
